We have a local Supermarket chain called Market Basket that's been making news.
The workers have been striking and picketing, customers staying away.
And it's all for a reason you are not likely to find elsewhere. The CEO, Arthur T. Demoulas was fired by the board and the employees are not happy about it. So unhappy that they are willing to put their jobs on the line because of it. Unbelievable...Management that is loved by its workers
It all came about when Arthur T.'s cousin, Arthur S. Demoulas got control of 51% of the company (compared to Arthur T.'s 49%). Arthur S. fired Arthur T and the rest is playing itself out.
Arthur T has grown the supermarket chain to between 70 and 80 stores. Prudent growth and the quality of new stores matches that of the old; the old stores get face lifts before they become excessively decrepit. It is the best supermarket in Mass and NH and possibly anywhere including Wally World. Stores are clean, prices are low, produce is fresh. You can buy things here on a regular basis, that are sales prices elsewhere. The employees work hard and are rewarded by Arthur T with higher compensation than other stores give their workers. Workers have longevity here. Arthur T. knows their names and he knows when their parents or children are sick. You can't fake this shit(yeah I guess you can but he does not) and employees eat it up enough to put their jobs on the line for Arthur T.
The situation is likely to be settled soon...probably with Arthur S selling out to a competitor for spite. But this is one of those cases where management and workers band together for the common good. Customers join because they know if Arthur T is not brought back they will pay more for inferior goods at stores that are not as well kept. Employees wont be treated well and wont give a damn about customers like they do now. The store is losing millions each week and I believe Arthur S\. has eaten through the companies reserve cash and will have to act. Everyone loses, except Arthur S.
