I found a few of these last weekend in one of the glacier fed creeks in the east Kootenays. Took one back with me and was looking for some help to identify if this is Petwood? or Bone? Thanks for any id you can give me on this one.

Leaves look like beech. Great fossils.

wonderful finds. the top one does seem to have some sort of grain but hard to tell from pics.. will you cut it? you may get a better idea if you take a little slice off one edge. The leaves are wonderful and so crisp in detail. Those are something lots of people would pay some bucks for! Can you find more? I think I'd be on the hunt for them!

Looks like I'm going to have to cut into it to find out what it might be. The leaves are pretty rare to find. Most times it's shells and sea critters inside the shale. I found a slab of shale full of pyrite or gold mixed in, looks great in the back yard, part of my landscape now.

Have you had a chance to cut into the mystery rocks, spiritstone? I found a slab of shale full of pyrite or gold mixed in, looks great in the back yard, part of my landscape now. what?! no pics? Hope you'll please post a pic of it in your backyard before the snow starts falling...again...

Spiritstone, I'd give it a 50/50 chance that your first three photos are of petrified wood and likely palm, but you won't know until you can find a few more of those tubule like dots and arranged in a pattern that makes them look like they are orderly nature and not just geology. The bicolor exterior and striations also speak to woody material. Keep us informed. Tom

Wood maybe, but palm? would of never figured so. What do you think would be the best direction to slice it? With the "maybe" grain or against, looking at it from the 3rd pic.
