What does it do when you fire it up? Looks like it could be a vibing lap or something...?... I have to wonder though, what "metalurgical" application it has if it was used as lapidary equipment? Try to find the model number on it somewhere, it should be on a foil sticker or metal plate like the UL spec in your pic... What a cool mystery you have at aby rate Keith, i'm sure someone here will be able to help put it to bed for you.

It looks like some kind of melting pot for some sort of metal.

It is a rotary lap. Lots of machine parts are lapped flat. I think you could put grit onthe plate and lap rocks. BUT, usually there are different plates for each grit.

damn ive seen 1 of those before....daniel is right...but what i seen it used for was a little diff....now that i think about it i think they had a saw to.
they use it in a metallurgical lab for getting a super high finish on diff types of steel before applying a coating of special wear resistant material....a type of CBN coating i think....a super finish is needed for the coating to adhere properly...it is a lap for sure.
i seen this before i started playing with rocks....i gotta call them tommorow and see where the stuff is....if i would have seen it lately...i would have thought rocks immediately ;D...kev.

I'd say for sure that rockhound was using it to lap rocks. Did you get any other round plates with it?
Pretty much the same thing as a CrystalMaster rotary lap.

Thanks, when you turn it on the plate spins it has a drain cup made under the plate and is piped out the back. I got a 3 wheel cab machine,3 -24in vib laps, 10in,12in,16in saws,a HUGE tumbler, and enough rocks and slabs to fill a 10x10 building. The family called me and wanted to know if I wanted any of the equipment when I got there I could hardly talk I was grinning so much. When I ask what they wanted for it they told me I could have it all for hauling it off if I could get it out quick because they were selling the house. I called in sick to work real quick. I am setting all the stuff up now so I will be asking some newbie questions. Keith

From your photo it appears that the ground prong on the electic plug has been broken off. I recommend that you replace the plug with a new one with the ground. It will be safer.
It looks like you gat a great deal there, WOW!
