Hello. my question is....when I go to the final polish stage of polishing...using the above...should I remove the ceramic pellets that I've been using in stage 1 and 2? No, I don't have a second, seperate bowl for polishing (yet). All I can do is scrub the hell out of the one I have. This I have done. I do not have plastic pellets. Would this help me with only the one bowl? Or....no media at all?

Thorough cleaning is a must ..so is ceramic media in a polish stage..A different set of ceramics for just the polish stage is best..plastics are not a very good media in a vibe...As Obi says "Use the ceramics Luke"LOl...Best of luck..Post pics when done to show off your pretties...John

I love my uv 18 and have never used a filler !! Always keep it full have a batch of small filler rock you use over and over no matter what it is ....just avoid rough edges after your medium grit as for rest of by the books ....I break most those rules to and end up with a lovely shine !! Never used a dedicated polish drum in roto or vib as well , I know this will bring a huge argument but I swear its a sales pitch lol

Forgot I tried a plastic bead filler once and hated it !! Couldn't get the smooth flow outta my vib from it ?? The soft damper of it maybe ?? Just keep it full

Greetings [hbonly] firstly may i welcome you back to RTH Forums from the other side of the pond! Ceramic media that moves with the rock through the stages can and should be used instead of new ceramic media as the new ceramic media can have uneven and rough edges, which can ruin your entire batch. Having a dedicated bowl for polish is not a sales pitch.i have done some pretty extensive tests on that.viewing the results under magnification.it all depends on how rich of a shine you want.also plastic pellets are for rotary tumblers. Dave

Dave On the magnification thing ...have ya done any looking at different grits , or added stages of grit sizes ? Iv been very curious on that topic Iv never looked at mine under anything other then eyes , so guess I cant argue the bowl thing .

The ceramics used in previous stages can be moved along with the rocks to polish in your UV18. Clean them with your rocks by whatever method you happen to use. No plastic in a vibe. If you haven't seen this yet it is worth checking out. Lots of good info. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/post/337618/threadAs for a separate bowl or barrel ... No scrubbing and no worries about cross contamination from embedded grit.

If you must use filler then go to your local body shop and get a bucket full of broken safety glass, then tumble them until they are round and have no more sharp edges. These can then be used as filler in any stage you want provided you clean them good. They are pretty cool looking too!
I dont use filler anymore, just rock.

THANK YOU for your replies. Helped tremendously. Will post pix from this batch. ONE more question.... how full is full? What is a good benchmark? I've heard that less than 3/4 full is bad. Why? is too full better than underfull?

Why? is too full better than underfull? I've got a UV18 but only been able to run it three times. Not enough roughing capacity yet. First two batches pretty good. Filled like the directions said, just above the center line represented by the blue stripe. Third batch got a fantastic shine. Filled level to the top of the center cone as per advice from members of RTH. It will be nearly full when using the cone as a guide.
