I have been there via Florence, but wonder if the route from Superior is easier or harder. I didn't have a problem with the Flo route, but if the other way is easier I will take that instead.
Opinions?

Cotton Wood Cyn is the smoothest and fastest road in. Last year the road to Wood Pecker had a few major off camber obstacles, keep your seat belt on.
Have fun.

The last time I tried to go to the Woodpecker, the road had been dug out by some sort of machine. It was clear that someone did not want anyone other than the big boys to get there unless they walked from Ajax Mine Road. I bet this is the same thing/spot.
I will take Cottonwood again than.
Mucho Gracias

Just out of pure curiosity are you going there for the rockhounding or just a fun day driving over rocks?

Rockhounding.
I try to avoid the rough stuff like these guys.
This is the wash that goes past there. This is right at the petroglyphs.

Awesome video of Lower Ajax!!!! When I had my old Bronco, that was the only trail I did not run up there. Not enough Beer to make me go there. LOL
If you are after the amethyst, I got a better site for you. I am hopefully going to stop by site tomorrow on the way back from a hounding trip to recon the area for a trip later this winter.
Thx for posting the video.

Woodpecker was an afterthought. I figured I would maybe hit it on the way out from Ajax. I do want to hit amethyst. That was the main reason I tried twice to get to the woodpecker. The first time I did not succeed. The second time I hit the dug out and didn't go far because I knew very little about the area and had not googled it. Now I am comfortable in the desert and have much more confidence. Fortunately confidence ≠ stupidity.

No, it is in Tonapah.
While at Woodpecker, check out this area, look for the black crusty rock. 33.215782, -111.199230
