When I glue rock for my 10" saw I just use elmers carpenters wood glue. a friend just uses white wood glue. I like to wipe off the rock and the wood with lacguer thinner and be sure to let it set for a couple of days to make sure the glue is dry. If I am in a real hurry I have used 5 min epoxy and glued with it but you still have to let it cure for a couple hours. I have a fear of rock coming loose in my saw. and I use cut off pieces of square oak stair spindle for the wood. (junk I have on hand, saved for me by a carpenter friend)

I had OK success with Gorilla glue. Mostly I just cut by hand though - or use a slab-grabber. I am too impatient to wait for the glue to dry. ALso, I use water based coolant, and I learned the Elmers regular wil let go after it gets wet.

If you want to be able to glue rock to a piece of wood and be ready to cut without having to wait overnight, try using a thick super glue. Lapidary supply places usually carry the thicker versions of super glue, like Super T made by Satellite City. You can buy a non-aerosol activator that makes the glue dry instantly with just one or two spritzes. Spritz the activator on the rock and put the glue on the wood...once the rock and wood come into contact, the glue will start to harden instantly. If you apply enough glue and spread it properly, the rock will not come off in a saw. I use this method on mostly grapefruit sized or smaller rocks.

Early on some folks here suggested using tile cement, it sure holds the rock good, but I found it really hard to remove/clean-up when the job was done.

When I mentioned using the thick super glue, I had forgotten that I found something else that works really well, but you have to let it dry overnight. I use liquid nails, the super adhesive type. Just squirt it on the wood, press the rock level against the wood and let it set up overnight. It will *not* let go when you cut it as long as you have applied enough liquid nails. When I place the rock flat on top of the wood, I usually put a little extra around the edge of the rock and this really makes it hold on tight. Make sure the rock is clean of oil and that there is no loose saw dust on the wood. When you are done cutting, what do you suppose is the easiest way to get the rock to let go of the wood? C'mon...think outside the box here, folks....you stick the wood with the rock attached in the microwave and put it on high for about two minutes. The liquid nails turns liquid and the rock slides right off the wood. Scrape the excess liquid nails off the rock and wood with a putty knife while it is still warm. You can wipe the last of it off the rock slab with MEK thinner. Probably any thinner or acetone will work. Be sure to seal off the tip of the liquid nails tube when you are done or it will turn hard in the plastic tip and you will not be able to use it in a caulk gun again.

The sawyers at the rock club I belong to use waterglass to glue the rocks to a backing bd so they can saw them. You have to let is set for 24 hrs before you can saw the rock, and to remove the rock from the board all you have to do is soak in a bucket of water, no residue or solvents to worry about.
