I went to a rock show today and there was a guy selling a whole lot of rock real cheap. He offered to sell a full tote for a reduced rate to which I countered with half of his original price a pound for the whole lot. About 20 seconds later we were weighing rocks. 224 pounds. A small amount of it was crazy lace, but most of it is misc agate and jasper. I have gone through about 1/3 of it and I would say that I have rejected about half of it for being stuff I am not real interested in. Still, half of it good in my opinion and half of it good to other people is not bad at all. I will probably sell off the stuff I don't want to keep pretty cheap eventually. So far I have only found one chunk that went over the hill. It was a chunk of country rock that something was trimmed off of.

Didn't take any. Was going to take a pic of something earlier but forgot and now it is dark.

That second bucket of junk doesn't all look like junk to me but then again I may be a little bias towards ugly an useless since hounding in the scumshine state is slim and I need to find potential in any rock I find. That still looks like a nice score to me!

I'm with FLrockhound some of what's in your "junk" buckets would probably end up in my landscaping but some of what I can see would take a trip through the tumbler or maybe even get windowed before being tossed. Cut a few slabs last night at the club shop of some unimpressive agate till it came out of the saw, then wowsers. Also we sell finished stuff at a few Christmas bazaars that aren't frequented by the rock snobs in the local clubs and generally sell a lot of stuff that they would turn their noses up at.

I am kind of a rock snob. I don't know why, but I really only like the best of the best most of the time. I will have to go through the stuff again in the spring when I have more time. This was a really fast sort because I was trying to clean up and a full wheelbarrow of rock was just more crap to deal with. I did find a keeper on top of one of the buckets the other day and moved it to the keeper crates.
Maybe I am just too picky but a lot of stuff that others really like looks to me like that stuff I could get by the ton and is not exceptional.

I've got to agree that the second bucket of 'junk' sure has several interesting pieces showing!

Much of what is in there looks much like that payson agate trash I found in northern AZ the first year I went there. I couldn't even give that crap away. There was a bit of agate which has too many fractures also. One mans trash is another's treasure. There is really nothing wrong with the trash buckets, it just does not appeal to me. Blue. Blue appeals to me a whole lot. In the ends I tossed two chunks over the hill because they had zero value other as landfill.

That's understandable, Mark. With being new to the hobby I can see how you could find flaws in stones a newbie like myself wouldn't see as a problem rock or waste of time. I'm the same way with woodworking an inspecting every piece for splinters, cracks an, weak spots that I use for my projects. Although I do tend to hoard the junk because it might just work for other projects down the road.

I'm with Mark on this one. People send me what I consider crap, and I'm thinking "what the heck am I supposed to do with this?" Not even good enough to go in the yard.
I usually set it out by the road hoping some neighborhood kid will haul it off.
