Found this last fall while helping pick up field rocks. I believe it's a stromatolite.?.? Not too much to look at but a neat find in Illinois. The wife wants to paint or dye it. Looks too rough/porous to shine or tumble so what the heck. Now that I can post some pics it will be easier to keep up I hope. Maybe that 200 lb hunk of tillite can finally make an appearance. It's kind of a reverse pudding stone, still some reds in spots but kind of dark to be effective. Saw pics too when I can get it off the trailer.

Nice find. I'm an Illinois hounder as well. Crinoids , corals and brachiopods are what I usually come across. Picked up a golf ball sized piece of crinoidial chert Sunday by the Fox river. Too bad we don't have much agate or jasper around here ....

snowmom Thanks. Very interesting link, at least to me. I have picked up many of those types of chert but never knew the names.

That's all moraine out there, the glaciers kind of stopped across central il and left huge mounds of transported stuff. Here is a link to some Illinois rocks and hints where they can be found, and yes, agate, too. crystal.isgs.uiuc.edu/maps-data-pub/publications/rocks-min/desc-min.shtml

The section that ISGS has on fossils is one I view and review often. I had forgotten as well that we have feldspars here. Have picked up a fair amount of those. Usually pink to reddish often with quartz. There is an area around Ashley Ill. where alluvial diamonds can be found. I think they are probably a rare find. We used to drive through Ashley on the way to visit my mom. Always wanted to spend some time hounding there but never happened.

Those are some great sites. I agree with putting the name to some. Most of my rocks though turn out to be some plain leaverite. Can't leave them though that's why we're there in the first place, to pick them up before the combine does. Crazy things always come back in the spring. Can't imagine how many were actually dropped there as the glacier receded . Bazillions !

Lot of the chert I pick up looks real promising at first. Browns, reds, yellows and even blue on the outside. Crack it open and it's plain white and or grey. Dang oxidation ... gets me every time ... almost. About a quarter of it is interesting enough to tumble, rest goes into the landscaping.

Yes! Don't you hate that. A nice pale green/blue and a whack later plain Jane. I was looking at some today that had finally washed clean. There's one that looks like a large grained granite with a sprinkling of bb sized garnets. Need to scrub a bigger spot clean and take a picture. I'd slab a bit but too big for the saw at the moment.
