when calcium hydroxide is introduced into water, the act of dissolving releases a LOT of heat. It's called heat of dissolution. It can be dangerous as so much heat can be released that the water boils splashing caustic fluid onto the chemist. Thick soapy caustic solutions are difficult to wash away too so you get a double burn. One from the heat and the other from the caustic. Caustic is no fun at all !!! Around it alot , should get a video of that reaction you are talking about but in a massive amount ... One drop on ya will ruin your day

Strong caustics are as bad as acids, maybe worse.

Wonder about trona products ? Trona products may be over kill for tumbling braders. Cheap limestone that is mined from a silica free deposit is adequate. The ole $8 fifty pound bag stuff. It seems like limestone deposits are about everywhere. Shipping and processing is the main cost. Powder, granules, pea size, any of those sizes would do the job as the tumbler will break them down to tiny sizes quickly. Most pulverized limestone is run thru 325 mesh which is about like 500 grit. At that size it suspends quickly at tumbler speed. It likes to coagulate as it breaks down after a few days, requiring water to thin it. So far, adding water about every 3-4 days for two weeks. The smaller the particles get the thicker the viscosity, strange. And that was running with out abrasive, so no rock dust effecting viscosity. Running well rounded obsidian on the larges side w/no filler, I see no bruises accumulating on the rocks. Which is part of the goal, added 5000 polish yesterday to see if the thick slurry will allow the polish to do it's job. Also added 5000 polish and about 8 cups limestone to 20 pounds of agate out of 1000 stage to serve as lubricant and a light slurry. Hoping for a quick 5000 finish.
