I have been shooting most of my photos with a Nikon D200 and a Nikon 18-200mm af zoom lens. For the most part I have found the set up great for just about any situation. However I now find myself in need of a macro lens to shoot close ups of a collection of fine jewelry which will be sold online. The macro feature on my Cool Pix is not up for the task. I know that there are quite a few great photographers on this forum who have done some real nice work in macro. As I recall JamesP had posted quite a few macro threads not to long ago. I would really appreciate any feedback with respect to macro lenses and lighting as I really need to get this project started soon. I am considering these three macro lenses:
Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS Macro Lens for Nikon AF Cameras
Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D
Nikon AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens USA
I shoot though a light box with continuous 5100k daylight fluorescent lights but am also thinking of adding a led ring flash to attach to the front of the lens for hard to light situations.
I really need to get this project started because soon I will not have the time. I an unpublished author and have been in the process of writing a book. The first draft has been completed and I have received a tremendous amount of positive feedback and interest. So much so that it was suggested that I acquire the services of an agent What had simply started as a therapeutic exercise has suddenly grown legs which have the potential to take me to places I could never have imagined. I feel as if things are starting to move to fast and I need to get re-grounded with my rocks and I think getting involved with macro photography would help me be able to see things in the smallest of detail. I know that I must sound as if I am rambling but it all is starting to feel overwhelming to me. If you all can make some suggestions about your likes and dislikes with different lenses and photo set ups I would really appreciate it.
