just when I got used to saying Sudbury Meteor Impact Event Now I have to learn to say Sudbury Comet Impact Event. First thought that comes to mind is that maybe the Impact event which created Lake Wanapeti immediately to the NE of The Sudbury crater was the return of comet debris only a few million years ago instead of the fluke it has been attributed to.(location so near the original crater.) Amazing news, thanks mr.mohs for bringing this to my attention!

I'm still impressed that scientist discovered zircons that were made harder by impact meteorology is cutting edge science

Your link is broken.
Do you realize that if the "second" event had been 2 hours later or earlier it would have completely missed the original one, right? And nobody would have even thought maybe it was the same comet as the first impact.
Assuming Sudbury was a comet, for it's trailing pieces to hit nearly the exact same spot on the earth is a vanishingly small possibility. Why wouldn't the debris trail hit anywhere else on the planet? Hell, it's most likely they would never intersect again.
Think about it. The concept of that portion of the earth intersecting the orbit of the comet, at the exact time that comet's debris came back around.... really??

Shotgunner, of course you are right. The article says they have revised the age of the larger impact from billions to near the time frame already estimated for the Wanapeti crater, so in actuality, the impacts for both craters "could" have happened close together. And to think that in the 1980's some were still arguing if it was an impact site at all. Science has come a looong way!

Science has come a looong way! Not really. Things like this go back and forth. There are always new science students and to make their chops they have to study and conclude something new. One way to do that is name a new species. Another way to do it is to say "these species that were once X number are now all one species". In this case a scientist said "see here, look at this detail, it proves this is one event". He may be correct. Or Another scientist could come along and say "see this other detail? It proves Dr. Simul's theory is incorrect and my shiny new KLMNO theory is correct"... And It's not always the fault of the students. Many university's have research departments and the law of that land is "publish or perish" so they seek new and exciting theories, collect data and publish the data ad nauseum until they prove something or retire, whichever comes first. Of course, medicine is rife with this problem. Remember when multi-vitamins were good for you? Now the science is they are bad. Salt? No longer a taboo. Alcohol? aids in longevity... I could go on. BTW, I received your box today. I am with you on the "jade" so far. Those stones conduct heat faster than normal stones, plus feel heavier in the hand. Unscientific I agree, but it's a first impression. The "breccia" is wishful thinking. Just another piece of possible jade with green mixed in the black. The big one? I'll cut it tonight. I dont have a little saw for the possible jade's. I need to learn more about the searcher's club workshop.

The Sudbury High school should be "Sudbury High School Home of the Comets"!

It was not a comet PERIOD. It was some poorly trained rockhounds digging for rocks and failed to fill in the hole. Shame on them !!!

parfive, the progress of science. It will be interesting to find out what they learn, and what use they may put it to. Shotgunner points out how it evolves, two steps forward and one back many times over, but it still makes advances. my grandma traveled with her parents in a wagon at the age of 3 to homestead in Nebraska. She saw the advent of the electrification of rural America, telephone in the average home, radio, television, modern antibiotics and vaccines, satellites, and lived to see a man walk on the moon. She lived to see the advent of the digital age. Amazing the transitions from one kind of life to the other. She saw it as all good. with the development of digital and now nano technology I know I will be able to point to similar changes that occurred in my lifetime. In another 20 years I don't think I will recognize this world. I think it is so amazing that the thing could be done... good if it was all private dollars that went into it, but somehow I doubt it. now I'm going to watch what's on that link, thanks for posting it!

I dont think it was "science" that brought a $100MM 4MP camera into what we have today. It was Industry. Industry is where the real science happens. Government effs it up. That paragraph shows two things messed up by government wonks. The $ devalued 50% in ten years (your savings account too!) and the cost of new drugs rose by 150% (equivalent dollars) in those same ten years.

Slate refers to "pharmamyths.net". Hardly a bastion of great journalism.
The refer to a british politcal journal. Not sure why we should be taking pharmacological advice from a british political journal. But you got it good buddy.
