We went to a jewelry show yesterday to do some early Christmas shopping and I came across a dealer with a few polished Brazilian Agate slabs. These are right up my alley for making my very large cabs. The slabs are 5" to 6" high. Bob

Boy oh boy, jumbo cabs a'comin. Beautiful agate slabs. You know, Brazilian agate sure never looked like that much. Is this black and white stuff coming from some new site? I've cut a ton of that stuff and it's usually in red tones.....Mel

Mel, I haven't a clue where in Brazil this stuff is coming from. It doesn't have any indications that it has been dyed. I've been getting some of these slabs from Stories and Stones in Angeles Camp. When I talk to them they don't indicate that it isn't natural. They used to travel to Brazil frequently to buy the stuff but not since the recession. I didn't ask the dealer yesterday where he got these but I presume at Tucson. Bob

Bob, Yeah, that's what I was wondering. After seeing how the Morocco Agate is turned into that beautiful Tuxedo Agate by sugar+heat treatment, I was wondering if the more subdued Brazilians are being treated in the same manner to create those beautiful black and whites. I actually like that kind of treatment but hate the dyed agates they are doing now. The older dyed and heat treated Brazils ( not the ugly blues and purples etc) are quite nice. I actually bought a few slabs for myself......Mel
