Hey everyone... totally new to the board and the hobby, sort of... i'm here asking for some help, for my wife, for xmas... she makes jewelery and wanted to start using natural stones/beach glass- thus your guidance relies on how happy she'll be for xmas (kidding). At this point i have purchased a lortone 33b rotary tumbler, mini drill press and diamond drill bits... what i need to know is: Where to purchase rocks and tumbling media (i see lots of people recommend therockshop)... tigers eye and sodalite are my faves- but it's not about me- yet lol What size rock should i be buying (they will be used as focal pendants in necklaces afaik)... and she doesn't have a way to cut/carve the rocks... sooooo? This whole tumbling thing looks like a lot of fun and i'm thinking i'm gonna have to buy a few tumblers for myself... anything else you think i should know/get, so come xmas morning she can just start it up and get going on it, just let me know... I'm located in Southern Ontario (Niagara)... so there doesn't seem to be much rock hunting that can be done- aside from the beaches of lake Ontario and Erie... sorry for being such a newb here

Welcome to the board. There are a lot of knowledgable people here. I use The Rock Shed all the time and I always get great, quick service. I would highly recommend them. I also use Diamond Pacific. They have a physical catalog to send to you, just ask on the website. They are a little higher in price but I have had success with them. Maybe someone else can recommend a couple places to go. Best wishes to you and enjoy the board.

The rock shed is great. The gem shop is good too. Several members here have good quality rough to offer.

AS far as size in a 3 lb barrel, maybe 1 or 2 three inch, some 2 inch all the way down to pea sized. The smalls are necessary to grind & sand the larger stones.
