Rhyolite and obsidian running in AO 220 in separate barrels. Rhyolite smoother, less divots than darn obsidian Glass filler 35% in rhyolite, 45% in obsidian Another from AO 220 batch rhyolite, but put in vibe for 24 hours with agate running AO 14,000 Closer in, pits from AO 220 apparent, high spots with AO 14,000 polish. Quick run in polish in vibe gives quick indication of surface condition. Day #2 unakite in AO 14,000 in vibe running with agate. excellent polish Day #1 - same unakite. Mediocre polish, agate was well polished. Unakite slower to polish than agate. Note on rhyolite with 35% glass filler-the soft glass filler seems to assist abrasion. Rough surface of glass filler seems to have affect on carrying abrasive, on visual. Slurry very dirty rhyolite color after 24 hours in AO 220. Running new batch of agate in AO 1000 pre-polish in vibe, will put above rhyolite test stone in vibe. To see what 2 days of AO 1000 and 2days of AO 14,000 does to it.

I had guests last night snowmom. They hurt my feelings. Skipped over my prized coral and Rio Grand tumbles and were drooling on those unakites. Life not fair.

I've got a batch of unakite almost done. I think I'll take it out tomorrow. I hope it's as nice as yours. The red stuff always undercuts more than the green.

The backside of the red one had some undercutting. It was a crusty spot to begin with. The green one has very few pocks/pits or undercutting anywhere. Both were abused w/the agate the whole tumble. This green and red one should do well, seemed solid throughout. Healed like agate with clear material, guessing chalcedony.

Wow, I had no idea that unakite dd that well in a tumbler. Beautiful stones!....Mel Had a rhyolite tumble w/fine polish Mel. Then starred thinking about the fact it was found way down in S. Texas on Rio. To make that trip; it may have had to be hard, high grade material. Found very little rhyolite while down there. Wonder if it came from the rhyolite sources in S. New Mexico.

These soft stones and vibe have been giving me a work out Michael. Gonna have to go back to the coral that never need clean outs much.

Rhyolite tumbling menu. Started it in AO 500 today, 35% glass filler, 12 RPM, 7/8 full barrel
So far, this looks like the recipe to be done, if 500, 1000 and 14,000 steps behave
1) 4 days SiC 60 grinding wheels, crushed like filler, 3/4 full barrel, 32 RPM, no glass filler 2) 3 days AO 220, 35% glass filler, 7/8 full barrel, 32 RPM 3) 3-4 days AO 500, 35% glass filler, 7/8 full barrel, 12 RPM 4) 2-3 days AO 1000 in vibe, on the watery side, 35% glass filler 5) 2 days AO 14,000 in vibe on the watery side, 35% glass filler

Rhyolite in AO 500 after 24 hours. Left is AO 220 finish, right rock is AO 500 after 24. Need more magnification to see the pits in the 500 finish already. It is in focus. I even reduced the amount of AO 500 to 4 tablespoons for +12 pounds of rhyolite. AO is effective for finish stages. I only use SiC for coarse grind, AO useless for coarse on agates, but rounds many Mohs 6 and less just fine.

Great comparison Jim. Things are coming along very nicely. Look forward to the blinding shine! If it polishes Ian, this stuff may be a quick cheap run. Got a big batch coming from Phil to tinker with. Will cut back on run times and amounts of grits if possible.(heard this before ?)
