I got schooled pretty well by several of you when I first started shipping rocks that were inadequately packed. (thank you!) Learning more tricks as I gain experience. I just found out that I can fit many smalls into egg cartons and that a large flat rate box will hold 6 egg cartons perfectly. By using an exacto knife, you can cut down one of the 'bumps' that separate compartments to fit in an occasional larger rock, but be aware that compromising the design of of the egg carton also compromises its strength. anybody else have more packing tips?

For small rough, strong plastic or mesh bird seed bags make a good subcontainer to help keep smaller rocks from spilling from a broken flat rate carton. Slabs work best sandwiched between layers of cardboard and packed vertically. Tumbles or slabbettes, I wrap real well with newspaper and pack tightly in a freezer bag. Most important thing is to eliminate rock against rock contact with slabs or polished stuff. However, there is no defense I can think of against really bad abuse of your boxes by the PO. I have had some come to me shaped like footballs and busted all to heck, held together only by the tape.....Mel

For the dog owners, the bags that Beggin Strips come in are extra sturdy zip lock types. I save all of the bubble wrap & plastic peanuts that things come packed in. Also for box sidewalls, scraps of foam insulation give extra protection. For extra delicate things, the cotton batting that quilters use works if you put the item inside its own little cardboard box.

Reinforcing the inside of the box to keep the corners as square as possible and packing tightly so things can't move around, along with mummifying the outside in packing tape seems to work best for me.

Sounds like a reasonable methodmethod if qty isn't an issue.
