I'm attempting to solder a 14k finding to a sterling ring that I am making for my wife... what can I expect that is different than soldering sterling to sterling?

Similar melting points for both alloys, 1615 for 14k gold, 1640 for Sterling. Use hard silver solder for best color match on the silver. It shouldn't be too much different than soldering two sterling silver components together.

One thing to watch for is the solder will "take" to the gold easier than the silver, so make sure you get them both hot enough for a good bond. If the silver has a good bit more mass than the gold, I would play the flame on the silver and allow it to transfer heat to the the gold. be sure to use very small snippets of solder so it doesn't cover up the gold and you loose the contrast of the metals. good luck, and post a pic of the piece when you finish it
