Adjusted the counterweights from 1.0 to .6. Max setting for 14 pound hopper is 1.6. At the setting of 1.0 agates polish fine but noticed a few chips on the glass filler. And rhyolite was not getting a good polish, to harsh perhaps. 0.6 setting really slowed things down 1.0 setting, fine for agate: 0.6 setting, better for soft materials(rhyolite run, with sample obsidians and a promising fluorite) Counterweight set at zero, exactly opposing each other. At 0.6, they are slightly not opposing. At setting 5.0 they are at maximum off balance.

It'll be interesting to see if that slower setting will give you the polish you are after. It sure seems slow, but then again the 1.6 setting didn't seem to be to fast. Maybe just a longer run at the slower speed...watching with interest!

It does look a lot slower so it will definitely take longer. Good luck,,, connrock Soft rocks mixed with these agate runs sure take longer to polish. Soft rocks may take longer no matter what the conditions are, not surprising. Running this pure load of rhyolite without harder rocks at a slow gentle vibration, hoping for a quicker polish, or a polish et al. Got a bunch of rhyolite, so will be finding these questions out. The cab folks will say that hard rocks shape slow and polish fast. Soft ones shape fast and polish slow. That says a lot. Settings on that Viking for a 14 pound hopper are .2, .4, .6, .8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and a max of 1.6. The first 4 loads of agate was set at 1.0 which was pretty vigorous. Changing from 1.0 to .6 sure nuff slowed things down. Should slow grit break down too. Which probably makes for a longer run like you said. I had a brass vibe tumbler and it butchered agates, too violent. No way a polish was going to happen in that beast. I was reading the procedure in the Viking instructions for obsidian. it suggests rice hulls for obsidian. hmm Have you ever heard of such ?? Instructions for obsidian:
