The forest is spectacular! Don't touch anything as now they search cars and request people report possible suspicious behaviour. Do stop at the shops near the enterance as they have lots of wood for sale ( not as large as mt. Catmandewe).

Hey Tony you gonna love the forest. If you haven't been to the Navajo Nation and area then you should go up thru the Painted Desert, Vermillion Cliffs, Red Bluff, and espeacially go over and stop at the Navajo Bridge! It's over a canyon that is actually the beggining of the Grand canyon. Way cool to walk out on the bridge and look down at the Eagles and other birds flying down there.

Do stop at the shops near the enterance as they have lots of wood for sale ( not as large as mt. Catmandewe). Unless they have a really good reason, they can't search your vehicle. You have rights and unless it is pretty good suspicion, they can't search unless you give consent. Refusal to give consent is not ground to search anyway, regardless of what they try to tell you.

A couple of years ago we visited the Pet Forest on a trip from Southern California. We arrived at the ranger station entry and was asked if I had any rocks in the car. My wife and I had collected all the way from L.A.. We ended up stapling about 25 bags of material and was let into the park. Didn't see a ranger all the way through the park. We stopped at a couple of places on the way back to Sedona and collected roadside pet wood till dark. Have a great time there. Amazing!

There's a ranch out there near the park where you can collect for $.25/lb.

Dobell Ranch. Thanks. More curiosity than anything. I've had my fill of petrified wood - at least the AZ stuff. Just can't help wanting to know what's out there though...

I did go through the park, they gave me chalk and had me write an X on every rock in my pickup, she said if I missed a rock they would confiscate it when I got searched on the other end. The park was way cool! I am glad they preserved it because if you could collect there it would have been all gone already, just look at Jim Grey's rock yard if you don't think so. I didnt even pick up one rock, took great restraint to do so in certain areas though. When I got to the other end they just waved me on through, didn't even look.
I then went to Dobells ranch and got about 700 lbs of wood. They have raised the price to 35 cents per pound. A must do if you are ever in the area.
I then went to Jim Greys rock shop and looked at his collection, wow is all I have to say.
I did get some pictures but I haven't downloaded them yet, will do so tomorrow. Was a great day.............Tony

Here are the ones I took with my phone, not the best but it is as good as I have since I can't get all the good photos off the sd card. A big long log on the side of the road The other end of the same log, someone was cutting firewood and got interupted A big full log at the visitor center, check out the roots on the other end Some more logs laying around I then went to Dobell's ranch to dig petrified wood, it is a pay to dig site that is pretty cool. Here is a log sticking out of the side of the wall in the bottom of one of the pits, paleo pick there for size reference. I tried to drag it out with the pickup but it wouldnt budge. Here is the haul of wood I brought home from there. I will work on getting the pictures off of the sd card when I get home, my cousin is a computer guru and he may be able to open it for me. Tony
