I tried taking some more cuts off the face and the rock kept slipping. I put the fat end (face) in the vise and took three cuts off the other end. The rock is now ok to be glued to a board.

slice it parallel to the bands and you'll get neat plumes and scenes.

I tried what you recommended and will cut the rest of the piece with this orientation: I'm still having vise and alignment issues and the cuts I got were uneven. I was looking for feathers and got them with the original orientation, but since I have enough of that I will continue with the scenic. This is what I wanted originally:
