I have an 8 inch Lortone hand feed saw- and I often end up with saw marks- particularly with bigger pieces. Does this mean my saw is not true, or am I feeding too fast?

More then likely it is just because you are hand feeding. A vice holds and feeds the rock at a specific angle all the way through the cut but hand feeding has slop/movement and every time the rock shifts a little bit the blade will gouge. The type of blade can make a difference too when it comes to saw marks. I hand feed some stuff through my 6" trim saw but the larger the piece the worse my cuts look. I never worry about the top of the slab because doming the cabs takes care of that but the bottom of hand fed stuff gets ground flat on my flat lap using a 100 grit diamond disc.

If you are talking about a hand feed with a clamp you can get gouges from a slight change in pressure when pushing or stopping and starting or anything in between. Like most things it gets better with practice but difficult to eliminate all together. Jim

Even with a vice, saw marks can result of the direction of the vice movement is not parallel to the saw blade. Marks on one side and not the other of the slab. But those marks you are seeing are inconsistent saw feed, faster and slower result in distinct marks on the slab - not straight is even more significant. Tom

When Elizabeth hand cuts small rocks in our trim saw thet usually turn out pretty nice, when I try to cut them they turn out bugly every time.
