Since we heading into another election cycle and the politricksters of both parties are starting to make another set of promises they will never, ever keep (while simultaneously lining their own pockets), it's time for a new amendment to the Constitituion of the United States: Mandatory Drug Testing for all politicians. Once a day we inject them with sodium pentothal. Yes, that's right "truth serum". If they object to the idea or concept, it's simple, they're liars.
After the admedment is passed, the plan is extended to all bankers, lawyers, realtors, journalists, insurance agents, corporate chiefs and doctors. While this may sound like a joke, I'm absolutely 150% serious.

Pretty sure that drugging elected officials just might violate an Amendment or two in the Bill of Rights.
I'd rather see term limits.

We have met the enemy and it is us. We elect politicians because we subconsciously like to be lied to. We dont elect real people, we elect idols. We think problems are simple but they are complex and nuanced.
There are a couple of good starting steps to clean up Politics.
1. Limit the Senate to Two terms of 4 years. Should apply terms and term limits to Supreme Court judges also. 2. Limit the House to 4 terms of 2 years 3. Do not allow members of Congress to build reelection war chests. 4. If they have any money left over after a campaign it goes into the general fund (ie. there will be no money left) 5. No elections fundraising dinners where only a handful of donors get access to the candidate or the office holder. 6. No free tickets to concerts, super bowl, etc. You get a decent salary and that's all you get. 7. No free airplane rides; must travel in coach; must pay their own way for any travel. 8. Must live in public housing when in DC. 9. Mandatory retirement age(65). This applies to the Supreme Court too. It's not that I think 65 is old or that older people are not wiser but lets face it, everyone slows down as they age and we need to draw the line somewhere. Our system encourages professional politicians and our hearts hate the idea. 10. Children must go to public schools in their place of residence. 11. No celebrity politicians- senators and reps must live in their respective election districts for 5 years before election.
Just a start with very little thought. If these were implemented we could go after the next round of changes

They are subject to the same health-care and retirement systems the rest of us get. Yes! Make them live by all the same rules.
13. Provide protection (ie., secret service) for said politician while they are in office only, not for the rest of their lives. It seems they constantly need to be reminded that they are not special. They are public servants while in office, working for us, and when they are done, they either get another job like the rest of us, or they retire. Simple, no?

8. Must live in public housing when in DC. Those serving in Congress make like $175,000 a year (whatever - not counting monies made using insider information, which should carry huge penalties), living in public housing is kinda unreasonable in my opinion. Let them live where they want to as long as they are paying their own way. Pretty good start to a list of rules they must abide by, other than the public schools thing that Jean mentioned. If they can afford private schooling for their children, that's their right. Same as any other American citizen. NO special perks, they work for us. Play by the rules the rest of us have to follow. Jail time for violators might get the message that we're fed up with your acting like royalty across in a quickness.

Ah #10...The politicians would not be allowed to send their kids to private schools, only public schools in their elected districts to force them to really care about education for everyone total agree ment with your comments about #12 and 13 HC and retirement
