Someone was looking for a location for Arizona black jade a while back. There is a guy on Ebay that is selling a bunch that came out of his fathers mine somewhere around Young Arizona. I sent a message asking if it is truly jade and this is his reply. HI! THIS TRUE JADE/NEPHRITE & IS FROM MY DAD'S BLACK JADE MINE IN YOUNG, ARIZONA WHERE I NOW LIVE. EBAY DOES NOT LET ME HAVE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS UNTIL YOU BUY SOMETHING , SO I CAN NOT SEND YOU ANY DOCUMENTATION. I AM AN HONEST EBAYER & MY AD IS TRUE. IF YOU ARE NOT SATISFIED I WILL GIVE YOU A REFUND. L ROYER I am going to buy a little just to test it and check the quality. Bad news for anyone wanting black jade from the guy I posted above. What I got is not jade by any standard that I know of. He sent a copy of an article in the Rock and Gem magazine (June 1983) about this jade discovery. I will get it scanned and posted soon I hope. One place in the article it was stated that the owner sent 12 stones to be tested and one of the 12 was nephrite. What it sounds like is that there was a thin layer 2 to 4 inches of nephrite on the bottom and a jade like stone above that. The piece I got and I imagine all that is left is the upper stuff.
If you want something really really black, fairly solid, few fractures (I think), easy to carve or to use for a black backing (to replace jet) this might be a good choice.
Much better understanding when you read the article. If someone is interested I can send a small piece in an envelope fairly cheap. Jim

@wampidy, I'm glad you purchased some of the material and tested it. I would be interested in reading the R&G article, too, when you get a chance to scan it.
I read up on the mine locality, and read that the material is "gem-grade" ferro-hornblende. ?

Forgot to add the source: www.greatrough.com/rough_jade_absolute-black.shtml"Absolute Black "Jade" is gem grade ferro-hornblende and not a true jade. It is absolutely black, with no green undertones, just like the Edwards black jade mined long ago in Wyoming. Absolute Black "Jade" is denser and has a higher refractive index than true jade. Absolute Black "Jade" quickly takes a higher polish than can be obtained with true jades. Unlike black onyx, which is dyed chalcedony, Absolute Black "Jade" is completely natural. Excellent material for inlay, cabochons and beads. Mohs hardness 6.5. From central Arizona" The rough sure is expensive on this website. Is it the same material, @wampidy?

That is the stuff gingerkid. Perfect black, hard but carve able and gets a water polish. I have not polished any but the piece I got has a spot polished. I think it will be great stuff to work with but the price is out of hand. I do not think that is the same seller. I have a feeling this guy bought up a bunch of it and jacked up the price along with adding gem quality to the description. He does admit that it is not jade though. Those sales could be bogus too for the purpose of making it look like the stuff is selling like hot cakes. I can send a little piece that I broke off if you would like to see it in person. Jim

Thanks, @wampidy! Please give me some time to see if I can find some pieces of welo to send to you, and, yes, I would love to have a very small piece of it for the specimen collection so it may be displayed.

Never did get my scanner set up so I walked all the way into the big house and used my son's scanner so I can post these pages from the Rock and Gem magazine printed in 1983. Long story short, there may have been a little jade there at one time but the stuff that is available now is definitely not jade, no way no how. I have a couple of pieces I am polishing now and getting close to finished. Close to start took a long time but I finally separated a few things out so I can actually finish something. 35 pieces at one time just never gets done. I have started three other projects since I started that batch of preforms. Anyway here they are. Jim Sorry about the size. I didn't want to go too big and I went too small. Poop happens. Hope you can enlarge and read.

Thanks for posting that Jim. The writeup and more recent advertising sound like some politician trying to spin something to his advantage. Not nephrite, but really like it ..... nephritic, ha

I've read bits about this stuff off and on, have been interested to see the attempted revival of interest in the stuff. Thanks for taking the time to post. good input.
