Just a heads up if you're thinking about visiting the Fairburn agate beds ... you might need a bigger boat. The French Creek crossing is still probably 3' to 4' deep and flowing strong:
Anyone know of another crossing to access the agate beds?

Someone somewhere just posted that they just went across it a few days ago with their bad assed truck.

If you do cross the creek you still probably can't get thru the caliche gumbo that is what the road is made of. There are Fairburns everywhere, the rockhounds that are serious Fairburn hunters walk a lot of the prairie looking for Fairburns and prairie agate and bubble gum agate. There are Fairburns north of Crawford in those gravel beds and also along the White river going out of Crawford.

Yep, this is John's herchenx bad arse truck that we made that crossing in! I wouldn't suggest anything much smaller to try it. But there is a fallen tree just up-creek from the truck path where you can cross if you don't want to swim. But it's kind of a long walk back to the beds. ~Roland

Anywhere from Wall Drugs west to the hills, if you see exposed gravel that isn't on posted private land it's worth a look. Fairburns have been found as far east as the west bank of the Missouri river, but anything east of Wall is rare. Most agates are found south of the highway, but some are found north too. The beds east of Fairburn are the oldest known beds, and are pretty well worked over, as is the area around Railroad Buttes, but a few nice agates are still being found in those areas. If you don't mind miles of walking, in and along the banks of Indian Creek is good, but watch for rattlers & mountain lions.

Thanks for all the information. Next trip I'll ignore the signs and follow my nose a little bit. Will probably drive instead of ride too; motorcycles aren't the best for rock hounding ...

Yeah I think the creek was about that high when I drove through it, thanks for the pic Roland rockroller! I guess some guy crossed it the day before on an ATV and nearly lost it downstream, I honestly don't know how he did it, the water would have been over the seat.

Next time I'm on that side of the state I really need to go Fairburn agate hunting.
