The wife and I were moving some limbs we cut back in the spring and piled up when we came across a nest of snake eggs. Rather than let them bake in the sun, I put some dirt in a bucket and put them in the carport hoping they would hatch. This morning I was rewarded with 4 hatchlings and a couple others pipping. Already released the four this evening and hoping all 10 hatch. Kind of thinking these are Great Plains Ratsnakes, but not 100% sure

Beautiful and how kind of you for saving them. I'll defer to Scott for the ID but they do not look like our local Great Plains Rat Snake. I'll admit though, that I've only ever had an adult in hand and have never seen hatchlings at all. Great rescue anyway!!!!!.....Mel

Great save! I like snakes.... spiders- not so much. We do have a gigantic garden spider out back that I let live, though.

I know more about what they aren't, than what they are. It could be a Fox snake, but they are pretty rare in SW Missouri. Possibly a Milk snake or even a Gopher snake. I pretty much rule out Northern water snake as the creek is dry most of the summer and fall and the eggs were found a good distance away from the creek A couple more pics when they were released. The closeup showing the eye is a terrible pic, but the only one I got showing eye detail to help with the ID

That's adorable. Tiny venom noodles. How big are they? they are cute, aren't they? the 4 I released averaged about 8 inches, but saw a runt in the bucket this morning about 6 inches long. Hard to believe that much critter can be packed in a shell smaller than a Pecan !!

beautiful! (not venomous lilacmoth) radio, how neat that you got to see them hatching, how wonderful and mouse-free the area around your home will be! now that's good payback.

The Wife and I used to raise reptiles of all sorts when we lived in California and actually were at several shows where Scott (Shotgunner) was in attendance also. It is neat to see eggs hatch and I never cease to be amazed at how that=y can be packed in such a small package!

I raised all sorts of poultry for years, same amazement could be said for birds eggs .. its all a miracle... everybody should have the opportunity-no privilege - to witness eggs hatching, or any live birth. indescribable

Fox snake.
Awesome find!
ETA well it could be a Emory rat too. Lol. Googling shows baby fox snakes with a bolder pattern.

The Conservation Dept lists them as Yellow Belly racers, but says most Missourians call them Blue Racers. We do have lots of those around, but never before heard of YB Racers Thankee muchly Scott!
