Anybody recognize what this might be. Both cut from the same little chunk that I cut in half. The black parts made a black mess, the blue part was kind of chalky. Not real soft but not at all hard either.

Hey Donnie that's purty! Let's call it Atlantean Mermaid stone!!! Seriously it looks like a mermaids tail scales! Correct color too!

A type of calcite maybe? Your description of the soft/hardness kinda points that way...
Appears dichroic...

As a sight ID from an on-line image I'd guess hemimorphite also. Testing might reveal something else though.

Are we allowed to say hemimorphite in public? In mixed company?

There are some varieties of turquoise that are found with a black/gray chert and/or quartz matrix. I'm wondering if your piece might be one of those with more matrix than turquoise present?

Thank you all very much for your input. I know it's hard just from a picture, esp since it's already been cabbed. I should have taken a picture of it rough. I thought at first it might be amazonite until I started cabbing it & got that black mess from the black/grey areas. I'm thinking it might be some form of turquoise, the hemmimorphite just didn't seem to fit, after researching it online. Should have taken a before picture!!!

Yeah, I had some hemmimorphite slabs and it doesn't look like this- but I have had some of that water web Kingman and it is quite like that.

Thanks Tela! I looked on the web & found pictures of finished cabs & some rough & that's exactly what it looks like. Thanks a bunch!

Yep, I have had some turquoise like that. Still makes beautiful cabs if you can keep it from crumbling.
