I usually prefer fishing for Stripers but tis the season for Albies; Fishing for this wily prey gets into your blood It's like hunting on the water, by stalking the prey. On the water off Falmouth: Fixing the lure: Following the birds, looking for the telltale chop: Charlie

Any day is made better if you go fishing. What is a Albies? Albies are Albacore... actually False Albacore.. . they are also called little tunas, same shape, great first run.. Unlike Striped Bass, they are not worth eating for most people, just the sport

Thanks, they sound like a lot of fun to catch. Never had the chance to fish salt water.

Charlie come to Cali this time next summer we can hunt true long fin and stripers on the same day. Lots of RTH folks in the gay Bay Area. Could be an awesome trip. And our albies are worth eating! X2!
Thanks for the thread.

X2! Thanks for the thread. I would love that. I have a sister in Moraga and a friend in Benecia. Love the Bay area. That sounds like big game fishing. Charlie

chassroc, that is a what we call an Atlantic Bonito. I think some may call them Skipjacks. Pretty sure it is in the tuna family as opposed to the jack family. Whatever, they are very common in large schools. No concern about fishing them out. Markings and structure pretty much labels them as Atlantic Bonito. I do know that they will pull line 150 yards north, turn, and be 300 yards south before you can reel the slack in. And wind around every line in the water. Full of blood and make A1 cut bait. Have to park boat upwind/up current and slowly drift into them with motor off to avoid spooking school. They often feed on glass minnows along w/the birds. Floating Rapalas/Rebels get em. Rebels cheaper, ha, they have a way of snapping line 3-4 times stronger than their weight. Love to watch a newbie hook one. If they get it to the boat they always comment on how small it is for the fight. ""Pacific and Atlantic bonito meat has a firm texture and a darkish color. The bonito has a moderate fat content. The meat of young or small bonito can be of lighter color, close to that of skipjack tuna, and is sometimes used as a cheaper substitute for skipjack, especially for canning purposes. Bonito may not be marketed as tuna in all countries, however.""

Yes James
We catch Bonito with the Albies here in New England. The fishing method...drift into the school is the same.
Some idiot comes in too fast and spooks them all the time.

Real albacore, stripers, halibut, maybe sturgeon in the Sacramento River?
