Took off early Friday morning to a get-together my wife wanted to attend. Since we were in the area, we made a time to meet and visit roy. Had a nice visit looking at, and talking rocks and places. Sat. morning we headed the 50 miles to Walla Walla, WA to see their rock show. Nice, medium sized show where things were nicely presented and the folks friendly. To those uninformed, when Walla Walla was named, they liked it so well, they named it twice. We left there at noon and headed for John Day, OR, where we made a decision to go to a place N.E. of Burns, OR where we found a pet. wood deposit three years ago. Made it just in time to set up camp before dark. Sunday morning the weather was great, so out to the dig site. When there before, we thought this might be a small deposit, and it proved true. Got a small crate of wood, then no more. We spent until it got too hot in the afternoon hunting for more, but nothing. Judging from the broken condition of the pieces, the crosswise rub marks on some, and some surrounding matrix, we think the deposit came in on a mud flow, or perhaps a glacier during the ice age.
The large piece is 6 pounds+, most of the rest tumbler fodder, but it does polish up well.
Monday morning looked good at daybreak, but by the time coffee was done, clouds were rolling in. We decide discretion was better than a soaking, broke camp and did some hunting on the way out. Found a nice 3x3" botryoidal drusy piece and an odd one we called "jaws". The flat one will make a nice display base for a finished piece.
A couple views of the area. Has to be more wood around, but probably a huge amount of exploration to find it.
By the time we got to Burns, it was pouring rain, glad we bugged out. Stayed the night in Redmond, had a nice visit with my sister and brother-in-law, came home Tuesday, one day earlier than planned.
