I know I've not been around much, but have pulled up a stool and have been keeping an eye on your project, Ed. This may sound like a no-brainer, but check the rotation of your motor before mounting it. (Maybe you already have, and I missed it? If so, disregard this suggestion.) Would hate to see you invest the time and energy to place that motor on a hinge (gravity tensioner, great idea!), only to find it is turning in the opposite direction than what you require. Okay, my two cents worth... Carry on!! Jean why does it matter which way for a tumbler? not sure it matters if your barrel rotates clockwise or counter-clockwise. sorry to hear about Lucy. Great photos of her. Chuck

Chuck, you are right. Rotation for a tumbler probably (I'm sure it doesn't) matter. And if one should want the barrels turning the opposite direction, one could just turn them around 180 degrees.
But I thought Ed had talked about possibly making the motor multi-function, i.e., turning a grinding wheel, sanding disk, or something else? Maybe not... Or it will come to him after this project is completed, lol.
Bob and Chuck, thank you for the comments about Lucy. I miss her, but we are both in a better place now. She had started this downhill trip in January, her immune system damaging her lungs. They were scarred (the vet said think cystic fibrosis), and breathing was becoming increasingly difficult.
TLC could only help her so much. (Sorry for the little derailment of your thread, Ed!)

Okay, my two cents worth... Carry on!! Jean Hey Jean!!! Great to hear from you!!!! Wow, you've got my gray matter sizzling regarding direction of motor spin!!! (I read down a few posts and see that you're talking about auxiliary use of the system. I've not really thought about it, but which direction would you want a grinding wheel, buffing wheel, ect., turning? I'm thinking you would want the wheel turned towards you from the top...like a table saw. So, if that is the case and in my setup with the motor mounted on the left side of the tumbler, I would want the motor spinning in a clockwise (viewed from the end of the shaft) direction. One good thing, though, is that according to the specs the motor is reversible so a re-wiring will straighten it out if I get it wrong. As for the idea of the gravity tensioner...I stole it from someone else here on RTH!!!

For your belt guard, I wonder if you could MacGyver something out of an old bicycle fender. Probably find different options at your local junk yard for low or no cost. Heck, you're in Alabama, what was I thinking...? There are probably 10 to 20 old bikes in your neighbor's front yard! (behind the toilet) I'm thinking more along the lines of some gridded shelving I have or for lightweight guards some hardware cloth. Hey, don't pick on Alabama by selling us short....those are vintage 70's mopeds (lacking a few parts, but with a nice patina on them)!!!!!!!!!!!

TLC could only help her so much. (Sorry for the little derailment of your thread, Ed!) I feel with you Jean. When my mother passed on six years ago we inherited her two biggest dogs. They both died this pass year. We've got a boxer/english-bulldog mix that is 13+ years old (very ancient for that breed/breed-combo according to the vet). Probably one of the gentlest, humbled, but intimidating dogs we've ever had. He's failing fast and I feel sure that he knows it but he hangs in there and gets around pretty good...it's gonna be tough. Lucy looked like she was a lively gal, you can tell by the smile in the eyes, people who've never had a good dog just don't "get it". As for derailment...what derailment?

If you are going to build something else - grinder, butter churn, whatever, just get another motor.

That's really impressive. All my parts and pieces for making things are on shelves and racks, that guy made 'em all do something.

petrifried's tumbler is a tight package. Not sure if it is home made but it would be a bench mark to follow.

Got the 3/4" 1018 round bar in from MetalDepot...pretty fast shipping. The round bars worked great with the pillow bearings... I've still got to figure out some dimensions but here is a mock-up of the rollers, bearings, and jack pulley...I'm too tired to tinker... IMG_7332a (Custom) by Intheswamp, on Flickr Late to the thread, but NICE DRAWING! Your grand kids must have brought the colored pencils back!

1dave, this is defiant. LOL " How to change the rotation of a non-reversible motor " If Ed changes the rotation of that motor I will have a tantrum. Them dang rocks are going to tumble as well CW as they will CCW. As Mom used to say, you have forced me to take a nerve pill. Satan's tumbler

LOL. Why did you do that ? You have defied me. I remember you wanted a particular direction of rotation. Dang Ed, I wish I was a s particular as you.
