Kevin in Augusta GA referred me here and is helping build a hand cranked gravel washer that will fit in a tub of water
for my next trip to the Crater of Diamonds.

Like a sluice box? You want the crank to rotate the "bed" like a conveyor belt? Have you Googled sluice box plans? How much material do you want it to process and how quickly? Maybe just something simple like a classifying screen would work? Like this from The Rock Shed: (they come in different sized mesh screens) about half way down this page: www.therockshed.com/grit1.htmlWould like to hear more what you intend this gravel washer to do. And, welcome to the forum!

hey guys...she came in the shop today and since im so busy for the next few weeks...its the end of the r.v. season at the lake...7 months of stuff to get home...and a few vehicles to winterize. i will and try and post a link to a video that is kinda what she is looking for but on a smaller scale....cannot be electric...maybe battery operated not sure...hand crank is what she told me. heck...the barrel can be as simple as a carb cleaning basket with some screen welded inside of it with an end put on it and shaft thru it with an opening on the end to dump...kicker...when done she wants the barrel to pivot upwards so she can open door on end to remove washed product its like an old fashion ice cream maker turned sideways and cut in half...if yaw could throw her some ideas i will get back here when i can...maybe i can get her something built when i have a little time...once i get everything home from lake...kev.

Something like a crawdad trap with a shaft thru the middle and one openable end.

Or a New Mexican chile roaster, sans the flame, and perhaps dipping into a water vat on every revolution.

All I have right now is a set of those purple classifications screens and it takes forever and puts strain on my wrists and hands jigging the screens up and down trying to get the diet and some clay to wash on through the screens. If I can just get it washed (with the mud and sand out of it) before I shake it through my classification screens, that would be a great time saver plus less strain on my wrists. Crater of Diamonds rules are no hydro sluicing (can only wash in tub already filled with water with no running water; no batteries, only powered by hand. LOL just like the video posted here for me by Kevin. Thanks Kevin. The hand made washer in the video has a few problems. The screen bolted inside the barrel is rusting. The small top load hole is also the dump hole and is a sharp piece of metal for the door (a real hand cutter). The tub isn't deep enough so silt and tailings build up in it quickly, and dumps only by hand lifting. I need something similar, with a dump door or open on one end, and with a deeper tub like a livestock water trough that can open on the bottom. Then so I won't have to completely lift by hand to dump washed gravel (like the muscular man does in the video) I'd like a handle on the crank side to use to tilt the washed gravel barrel up so it slides partway down a metal track and dumps into a barrel of washed gravel at the opened end. We used to have a livestock feed mixer very similar (kind of like a hand crank concrete mixer) that allowed me to easily mix, lift, and dump up to about 100 pounds of feed into large garbage barrels with lids (equivalent to about a five gallon bucket of wet washed gravel). Like to wash as much as possible as quickly as possible. Then I will be able to classify the washed gravel much faster with out all the shaking and jiggling and rubbing my gloved hands around on the classification screens to wash it. The crank rod through the middle needs ro be long enough to fit into notches on each side of the tub (as shown in the video) . Thanks everyone for any suggestions and for ideas. I'm going back to the Crater in a couple of weeks and would love to have something to try out.

Thanks Mark for the website. Yes it has something similar to my idea, but need it sturdier with a deeper tub and be able to lift it out to dump it with it mounted on tracks that would allow me to tilt dump the washed gravel into a bin

Well, if you find it, let me know because I have been thinking of trying to make something like that for a while but just don't have the time.

Thanks Russ! I googled and and found some great ideas that might work immersed in a tub of water.
