Hi all, my friend and I went to Utah last week for a few days to do some hiking and rockhounding. We camped at Lockhart Basin the first night (east of Canyonlands) and hiked in the Needles district the next day, the Big Springs trail to the Squaw trail. It was nice but the weather was threatening. When we got back to camp after the hike I was exhausted and reading my "Gem Trails of Utah"book and learned pretty much right where I was camping there's a limestone layer across the creek and up the hill that has some good stuff. But I was tired, and just walked up the creek bed which had recently flashed. I think I was pretty much the first person to walk it since the flash and found some nice hunks of agate and red jasper. There was lots of lithic scatter and incomplete arrowheads around the camp. In the middle of the night a Screech Owl landed next to the tents and went through its whole repertoire of calls, it was cool. The third day we went to the Dubinky Wells sight A, described in the Gem Trails book. There's literally thousands of tons of agate out there. It was really hard to throw away stuff and my pack got kinda heavy. We camped that night at Cowboy Camp, right outside Island in the Sky. Nice campsite but we got wapped by a nasty thunderstorm that night. It had rained every night so far. We went that day to a place west of Moab a friend had told me that I'd be able to get some of the agate the locals call "Pigeon Blood" and scored some nice hunks over there, kind of in a hurry because another nasty storm was brewing to the south. We bailed on camping another night in that and drove 8 hours home. Good trip, got a couple buckets of rocks to play with this winter. Here's some pics: Lockhart Basin campsite Jasper in Indian Creek. Too big Dubinky Wells site A. All that white stuff is agate Agate still in the limestone Island in the Sky, looking southish The view from Cowboy Camp - the rainbow is pretty much where we'd go agate hunting later in the day This is a piece of pet wood my friend found in Indian Creek in Lockhart Basin here's a few slabs I've cut from the rocks - the one of the left is from Lockhart Basin, the other three on the right are from the spot west of Moab:

looks pretty exotic to this flatlander the idea of acres of agates is mind boggling. Red red earth there a whole 'nother world! Thanks for this post.

Gorgeous pictures! Thank you so much for sharing, I would never see these places without you guys. I see the Atlantic ocean and that's it.
I see you have one of those square blue tables. Is it the one with the screw in aluminum legs and plastic covered slats? Those things are so great!! I grabbed 2 on REI clearance years ago and they are still in great shape- use them for everything.
ps- sorry about the rain....

They're pretty popular with the rafting folks that's what I got it for originally but it works great for car camping too. As for the rain, it's all good no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing and gear... unless it's wet from three days of rain :-)

Exemplary taste in vehicles, get yourself a roof top tent, a lift and some off road tires, more driving and less hiking. Lol. The slab on the right is to die for
