I've got probably got between 50 and 100 boxes of old business papers that I need to get rid of. We're talking musty, been leaked on (roof leak, that is), crumbly papers to good, dry papers. These are 15 years and older papers. Anybody got any ideas of getting rid of them? I can dump them in a city dumpster...I've already had the city to drop one off...but, I'm a little worried about going that route. Most of it is old customer invoices, ledger sheets, and paid bills. But, there may very well be bank statements and possibly payroll sheets that might have social security numbers on them. I just don't have the will nor energy to go through all of these mostly moldy boxes. Anybody got an idea on this. I know stacks of paper do not burn very well. I've read of people hiring shredder trucks to come do mass shredding but nothing like that is around here. Just pitch them in the dumper and throw some dead animals on top? Maybe an escapee from the funeral home?
Thoughts, anyone?

After thinking about it, I think the only thing I would be concerned about are SS numbers. The bank is no longer in existence so no worries about account numbers or the like. Just those pesky SS numbers.

Around our area, they have huge shredders that you can drive to and shred away any papers you want destroyed... If not and your in a rural area, get a burn barrel and have a small fire going,of paperwork..Screen the top from cinders flying everywhere...

If you were in the north, I'd suggest finding someone with an outdoor wood burner. I've heard that you can burn stuff like that in them. Probably not a lot of those down your way, huh?

In addition to a big marshmallow roast, I'd haul them to a commercial shredder. If not near enough, maybe you could rent a biggish shredder. Good luck!

Does your local fire department ever have burn houses for training?
Where does your trash go? Here, ours goes to an incinerator.
Compost? LOTS of compost.
Paper recycler or mill?
How far to the nearest city? Must be approved methods of disposing large quantities of paper in a city.

Here they have regualr shredding drives where people can get their papers shredded for free then the paper is recycled. You can see if there is something similar to you.

Thanks for all the ideas. My town has two traffic lights...we thought we were "big time" when we got a Hardee's...then Hardee's!!! This year, lo' and behold, we got a Pizza Hut (take out only, no dining room). I guess what I'm saying is that we're kinda small town here and a shredding service would probably travel 50-60 miles to get to us. The rates I've seen are not cheap but my bank account is. We've always been good about labeling the boxes as to what was in them so I think what I'll do is check labels (that I can read) and do a quick inspection of the box....and dump them in the dumpster. Anything looking like tax forms or whatnot I will hold out and burn. Burning stacked paper is difficult so if I can lower the amount to burn by dumping invoices and paid bills that will make it easier to burn the more sensitive stuff. Oh well, gotta get it done somehow...

Well, I could throw them all on a trailer, haul them out to the country, pile'em up, heap some old rubber inner tubes on top of them and top that with some burnt oil and gasoline...let soak a while...light a cigarette fuse...and step (way) back (gas fumes travel quiet a ways sometimes). Naturally that would need to be done about dark-thirty. Or...just dump them in the dumpster.

Do you have a large area you would like to block out weeds?
Use them for compost.
