My 6" home made trim saw finally bit the dust (Ha!). I purchased it off ebay and have gotten my $ worth. Time for a saw that I can depend on and in searching I came upon this: The motor left over from the original ebay saw is good so all I need is the saw. Anyone have recommendations on the Covington saw or other options? Does this price seem right? thanks again, Don

I'm a bit surprised to see a trim saw made with a removable top to accommodate a 1/2" grinding wheel in place of the blade. The swap would be sufficiently cumbersome to not want to be done often unless you really did not want to have another grinder on your bench. Personally I've had 2 6" trim saws (one the rock rascal Model t (grinder on the side) and a Diamond Pacific combo unit (saw and grinder too). I sold both because my 8" trim saw does the job on trimming and allows me to slab little rocks as well. So if you can get an 8" for nearly the same money I would. Lortone seems to have comparably priced machines but I have no experience with the specific machines involved. Personally I don't like combo machines that have grinders and saws running on opposite ends but this combo eliminates that duplicity. It might be fine, but is the top a bit more constrained (small) than other trim saws? It would be nice to find a used one, but then if we all did that the lapidary equipment companies would be out of business. Good luck. Most any choice you will make with be OK> Tom

You can get the same saw for $227.00 here. www.maxstoneworld.com/page11/page4/page4.htmlThe cast aluminum tank & table would make for a much more rigid trim saw than the Rock Rascal. You can also get a vise for the Covington saw. Scroll down the page on the link I provided. I have to agree with Tom that using it for grinding would be more trouble than it's worth.
