.... Pat , micellular and Drummond Island Rocks As I have mentioned, my grandson has a pet tortoise (a really inquisitive and gregarious creature). I wanted to get my grandson a pendant after I saw one that snowmom posted awhile back. Then when I saw the pendant by micellular who learned from Pat, I decided to do that. Nope, not rocket science, but a fun little project... and I mean small, the cab is 30x22, I think. I asked Chuck and he sent me a little cab of petoskey to use as a shell. Here are my sketches - yeah, I can't draw, but I like to get the general idea down sometimes. I settled on the following after my duh moment that I could simple separate the leg and prong with a saw line. After sawing and before filing and tweaking. Beginning to look about right.... I so wish I had thought ahead about the nub for a bail hole. Come to think of it.... he has no tail, either. Oooops! Anyway, I think he's cute and he really sparkles with the diamond cutting. Hope my little grandson likes it. Knowing kids, he will love it, wear it for a few days and then it will go into a cigar box to keep because grandma made it. That suits me fine.

That is adorable! What a cute little pendant! I love how the texture of the diamond cut (is that a hammer?) complements the coral details.
Thanks for showing your creative process. I really enjoy seeing them. Do you use contact graph paper, or regular graph paper + double-sided sticky tape?

Great concept - the pattern on the pet rock works really well with the design.. I'm sure he'll love it - for that few days and then (much) later when one day he pulls a cigar out from that box, he'll find it and the many memories all over again.

That's darling! Sketching out a plan is helpful to me, too. The various textures and the stone-resembling-a-turtle shell all work well together.
Tela, I think you already know how to solder, but turtle settings are a good way set prongs/stones without a torch.
I hadn't noticed the lack of tail until you mentioned it. Maybe he has his tail tucked in! Do turtles do that?!?
Thanks for showing us!

Very cool piece and you worked fast too. Looks like it would be a good beginner project. What tool or process was used to do the diamond cutting?

Thanks all! Pat Yes I can solder, but I really wanted to do this- it just looked like fun. I think turtles can tuck their tales. micellular I used regular paper. I used stick glue- like the kid's kind- to glue it to the copper sheet. Works great. For those interested- I used the diamond pave attachment on the Foredom to do the diamond cutting. I really wish you could see it in person. It's a very nice effect. My grandson came over yesterday and I gave him the pendant. He absolutely LOVES it! Actually, he liked it more that I thought he might. He might wear it awhile, afterall.

Glad to hear that he liked it. Did the size of the cab work out good?

Glad to hear that he liked it. Did the size of the cab work out good? Chuck Yup. At first I thought it would be too small, but it worked out fine. You'll be glad to know that, after he asked about it, I got to tell him all about the stone and how it comes from one place in Mich. Thank you, Chuck- I know you got it done for me in a hurry, too.

Love that Petoskey stone turtle. Pure genius. I can confirm that yes, turtles can tuck in their tails.

This is a pretty old post. I'm happy to report that he still wears it. When he comes over with it on, I give it a good cleaning and polishing. Still looks pretty nice for raw copper.

I showed this to my wife and she loved it. She is a turtle person and likes all things turtles. We were at the beach this past summer and there was a guy who made jewelry and he had a few different turtle pendents. If I remember correctly he used Abalone shell for the turtle shell. They looked really cool but he wanted a mint for them. I personally like this one better than those, looks more natural. Great work!

I think I brought this thread back from the resting after you gave me that link. I had to say something about the Petoskey Stone turtle. I'm from Michigan after all. Well, now a few newcomers besides me who missed the thread the first time around have seen it too.
