I have a very good friend in Lithuania who can not purchase a electric crock pot or anything similar there. (for a pickle pot) They just don't use them. So, we have been brainstorming ideas. Y'all have any to add? We thought of a rice cooker on warm, a rigged up light bulb job like the dop pot things people make and others.

Well, EU has already phased out the incandescent bulbs for probably 5 years now. That's out.

I made the suggestions to her, but over there, people don't use the drip coffee makers, or the hot bulbs. I suggested the coffee cup/candle warmers, too, but they don't have those, either. Apparently, we are quite gadgety.

Gas burner, set to lowest setting. oven safe stoneware pot with lid. Thanks, but, I thought stoneware wasn't safe for burners? Besides she was looking a way to avoid flames. UPDATE:: She has decided to bite the bullet and order a crock pot from England.

Guess, Mom was wrong about something after all.

If she has a micro wave she can use a plastic bowl and just heat it up once in awhile. also cold pickle will work, just slower. But as she ordered one it really don't matter now:) BTW wally world up here in Canada has the little dipper crock pots on for 10 bucks CAN, Rio grande wants about 25 USD for the same thing. I bought 2 as my first one (from Rio) crapped out.

There is a hot-plate - see www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#q=hot+plate - which can be used. I use safety pickle and just a pottery drinking mug. NB This is specifically for pickle and not for anything else. I keep no other pots like it so it won't get confused and should by the smallest chance, confusion should arise, then since you should only use brass tweezers, I keep a pair on top to serve as a notice / reminder. Then, it's kept in a different room. H&S - belt and braces - no room for error.

How about a votive candle under a metal frame? Old bread pan or small cake pan with vent holes or raised on blocks. A ceramic or pyrex dish would work. Wouldn't have to worry about leaving the crock pot on.

soup or coffee can with vent holes would also be a good stable platform for a dish.

Thanks for the help and suggestions. Knowing her, I figured she would rig something up, but she got frustrated and bought a damn crack pot from England. Ordering out of country can be tricky for her. She has a 1000.00 Otto Frei order lost somewhere right now.
