I just noticed I have been on RTH for over ten years!
There are only 15 or so (active) members who have been registered this long. Unfortunately that means I'm closer to the end of the line. Tumbling was an accidental hobby for me that has spawned rock hounding, cabuchon making, rock cutting, shell polishing, glass polishing, silver smithing and jewelry making.
It really had a huge effect on vacations. I always wanted to go to places that afforded opportunities to collect rough. My wife and I started taking craft class vacations too. All in all its been enjoyable

cheers to you, Chassroc, tumbling was also a happy accident for me so many years ago. My parents bought me a Harbor Freight unit one Christmas, and the rest is history. I am not the oldest registered member, but one of them. Good to see you still upright and sniffing the air.
Happy whatever holiday you celebrate!

I have been here just over 3 years Charlie.
Learned tumbling/rock grinding, using a computer for the first time, typing, social media, digital photography, forum etiquette or lack of, met many people, rock hunted all over the place.
And almost 17,000 posts.
Valuable experience and education.
The computer experience has altered my career course over the same 3 years.
I want to extend a thanks to every person that engaged with me here. And wishing Happy Holidays to all !

chassroc I need to know the story on how you accidentally tumbled rocks. I hope you stick around for many more years. I'm at a little over 6 years, and I lurked and learned for a couple before that. It would be good to see a pie chart for how long all the active members have been here. A good sign of health in any organization is retention of long timers and plenty of new people coming in and staying, I suspect we have a good balance.

KD you have been a member longer than me...I think you were from NY State... what happened to Stefan? James you are amazing...cant believe you are just over three yrs... its funny how neccessity is the mother of all inventions. Fossilman...hope your rock pile grows and prospers. Lee...You are a rock on RTH.
I had bought my wife a Lortone 3# double tumbler as a gift and it sat idle for a year or so and I was determined not to waste the (close to a) hundred dollars I had spent on tumblers, grit, and rocks. So I started using it myself and got hooked. Bought some rocks from Pho and Banjo and wanted to get my own. Looked into William Holland School and found my wife( rock Carving, Stained Glass) and I (cabuchons, Opals, silver) could go on Crafty Vacations without spending a fortune...and of course, when you go to National Parks in SD, washington, oregon, wyoming, montana, arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado, rock hounding is always available..

Yes, I am in Central NY. Don't know what happened to Stefan, he is/was in Western NY and dropped off the radar here sometime around 2007 according to the RTH member records.

I'm just now geting to the point where I can take vacations based on rocks I want to pick up in the last few years. Still love the tumbling - probably because I have a forced break every winter, but I nevere branched out into other lapidary forms. I still never get over what the rest of you do with rocks and metals...

Registered 9 years ago today after Christa got me a Thumlers for Christmas. Slowed down a bit this year but never looked back. Great to see the 'old timers' still here, and all the newbies alike. Have a great new year everyone!

Only been here a while, November 2007.... don't post much but do check in most days for a read. On occasion I will post my opinion. Anyways when spring comes all you Northern Hemisphere members get out there and have a good time hounding. Mean time I am out in the weekends licking rocks and enjoying the summer (PS Christmas was family, friends and a big plate of BBQ ginger, garlic and chilli prawns with a yogurt, lemon, garlic and tabasco dipping sauce). All the best to everyone for the new year and enjoy another year of getting out there to pick up rocks0. Cheers Scott
