On a whim, the boys and I went on an impromptu rockhounding trip up to the high desert, east of Calico Ghost Town. Some of you in SoCal will recognize the site as the Yermo location next to the Calico Early Man Site. Since this was completely unplanned, we got a late start, leaving the house around 9:30 AM and joining all the Christmas Eve traffic that was trying to get out of town to Las Vegas or San Diego. The outbound traffic was pretty heavy. Andrew packed our snacks and drinks and I forgot my jacket. The boys didn’t, fortunately, as the weather was clear and cold (for SoCal) topping out at about 50 degrees and windy - 10-15 mph gusts - making it cooler and sometimes unbalancing us. The Yermo site is a good one as the access and pickin’s are easy for families. We stopped at two different collecting areas. A few photos of us going through the loose rock. We got back too late for photos of what we hauled back. Will try and get a few today as I’d like to cut some. On a prior trip we found a bunch of agatized palm fiber. At the time, I didn’t know what it was until I took it over to a friend, Walt Lombardo, who runs Nevada Mineral and Book. Genius that I am, I then promptly went home and scrounged through the backyard pile and pulled out all the other palm. Merry Christmas Everyone. Hope it’s a blessed day. UPDATED: A few photos of some of the material. It's pretty non-descript until you get around to cutting it. Then it's either a "WOW Awesome Find" or "... garden rock ...". We have LOTS of the latter! LOL Hope you all had a great Christmas!

Yeah, but what you dumped in the garden would probably be a WOW!!! for me. I did pick up a really nice red clay dirt clod the other day...crumbled off an undercut clay bank from all this rain we've had. Christmas was good...eventually. Our daughters and granddaughters were coming for supper Christmas Eve but both got held back due to the rain. My youngest daughter and her three little ones took almost 1-1/2 hours to travel about 15 miles (as some crows fly) trying to get home that afternoon from another Christmas gathering...road after road was closed/flooded. Eventually when they made it home we told her to stay there. We saw them all the next day and I had some good time with the granddaughters. I hope ya'll had a good one, too!

Whoa, sounds like everyone had an adventure...glad everyone was safe. Funny comment about the red clay! My boys tend to go for volume so there's piles of rock out back that probably could have stayed up in the desert but, ultimately, it's about being out with my boys. They won't be with me and my wife forever so we try and make the most of the time God gives us.
