Most the material you have posted is in fact, not palm fiber. Many folks misidentify this material. Palm fiber is characterized by evenly spaced, well defined, vascular bundles throughout. The Yermo palm area has very little fiber because palm fiber is the above ground portion of the tree and those palms were burnt down by volcanic ash/activity. The result is, most Yermo stuff is palm bog ( a volcanic mud slurry with a few included roots, rootlets, or other plant material) or good palm root which is the below ground root ball with larger compacted roots. There is good fiber at that location but it is far from common. Here is an example from Yermo for comparison......Mel Texas palm stump cross section that shows the vascular bundles: Palm root: Yermo palm bog with roots: Calf. example at root, fiber interface( where the trunk hits the dirt)

Thanks Mel. I take people up there quite a bit and most of what they find I lump into the "palm/bog" or "palm based" category. Interesting if there is any color variations or just for the fossil enthusiast.

Ah, thanks for the help, Mel! The comparison is helpful as the materials at Nevada Mineral and Book don't look like the photos you posted.

John, I've made a lot of trips out there over the years and most the material from there is pretty much browns and earth tones. There is however some very nice orange on white bog and root to be found. I've still got a 100# boulder of the orange/red /white stuff in my garden that the wife found partly exposed right behind the old dumpsite. It's primarily bog but does have many large well defined roots running through it. The real red stuff in my group of pics is from the Castle Butte area if I'm remembering right....Mel
Paul, When I was working for the AG Dept, I had the opportunity to view a bunch of live palms that had been cut at their bases and it was amazing. The recently cut wood looked exactly like the fossil stuff with the vascular bundles and root just as well defined as the fossil stuff. Very cool learning experience when compared to fossil palm root and fiber.....Mel
