My son and I plan on heading out for a longer trip this year. Leaving Cleveland to head east and south. What I found are mostly the tourist mines. But we would appreciate if any of you could guide us to some hounding spots near any of the below locales - or better alternates to the places we plan to stop.
- Morefield Mine - Amelia, VA - Ruby/Sapphire Mines in Franklin, NC. Specifically looking at Cherokee, Mason, and Sheffield - Hogg Mine - LaGrange, GA - Crater of Diamonds State Park - Murfreesboro, AR - Benton County MO for Mozarkite - but haven't found a specific site yet
Then back through Chicago and home to Cleveland.
So how can I make the trip better? Thank you.

Hi, Toad, when will you and your son leave for the collecting trip? Although we live in LaGrange, and have never been to the Hogg, many other forum members may share their experiences with you at the site. I think it's around 35/person to enter the site. hoggmine.com/We've had a LOT of rain, and LaGrange was declared state of emergency around Christmas, which the rain would mean more pretty crystals to find. It looks like the mine is open though! lagrangenews.com/floodPlease let me know when you plan on making your trip, and maybe we can meet you at the site? If you and your son head into Georgia around April or October, there's also free dig at Graves Mountain. www.gamineral.org/ft/commercial/ftgravesmain.htmlGeorgia started mining gold in the late 20's ('29, I think), and there's a couple of gold mines that folks may visit with tours, and a gold museum, in Dahlonega. (ETA: GA Gold Rush in 1829) You'll see the Gold Mine Package in the middle of the webpage, but I'll post the link: dahlonega.org/see-do/discover-golddahlonega.org/see-do/discover-gold/437-gold-fever-packageGeorgia Gold Rush: www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/history-archaeology/gold-rushI hope this helps give you some ideas for yours and your son's trip!

Thanks for all the great info, Jan. We were planning on making the trip in late Spring/early Summer, but may need to rearrange for that free dig - depending on timing of the other mines. Thanks for the links will have to check all those out. Would love to meet up with other members. Todd

I just set up a collecting date for the Mozarkite on June 11th near Lincoln, MO if anyone wants to join me. Going to Blueberry Farm. The landowner charges $0.50 a pound to collect. I then plan on driving to SE MO just outside Potosi, on June 12th, to look for lace agate in the old mine tailings. Again, if anyone is available... tandl I will be driving into Chicago June 9th Oh yes, and I decided to break the trip into 2 parts. One out west to MO only. And then another out east to NC and VA. Skipping the South.
