So that's where the term "hard rock" came from...

We've all banged on rocks. Pet wood slivers often a fairly loud when struck. Thin plates of basalt often ring appropriately. And more recently I was banging on green boulders in the Frazier River of BC trying to distinguish nephrite from serpentine. No one danced and its still open to debate whether I was able to distinguish the nephrite. Cool. Tom

Yep, like Tim said, when hunting jade at Porterville, CA, the hunting technique definitely involves striking boulders and lenses with your hammer. Serpentine goes "thud". Nephrite rings/clinks like a bell. Real good way to tell them apart before you even have to do a scratch test.
Here in Texas, the silicified limestone is very musical. Lots of voids and caves and sometimes when you ride your horse along the creek bottoms, the horseshoes make pretty nice music as they pass over a hollow in the limestone rock. I actually visited a cave in Commiefornia one time ( Mercers Caves) where the guide played tunes on the angel wing travertine formations.....Mel

That is so neat! I didn't hear mention of what kind of rocks those were. Wonder about the different tones of different rocks.
How did they come to the conclusion that the goal was music/sound?
Thanks for posting!

Forced me to look up a 'bi' disc. Chinese neolithic going back to 3000 BC. Often jade. Thought it may have been musical instrument, but not, more ceremonial.
Interesting tones and history toiv0

We have ringing rocks locally in the Boulder Batholith - article link. Unfortunately, they do not ring once removed from the pile and brought home -- at least we havent been able to make them work. Not my video but a cool demonstration of them in action.... Cheers

Gotta be some glass grade chert to ring like that Andy. no idea what type of rock ? The zone is all granite but this rock appears to have a bit of iron in it.... Next summer when we are dirt biking up there I will grab a chunk to slice on the slab saw, based on the vid in toiv0 original post maybe we can mount them in such a way to get the ring. The boulder batholith is renowned for its crystals found in pegmatite - smoky quartz is typical but lots of other less common treasures. Big hammer, strong arm break lots of rock up to find the good stuff...crystal hunting, a whole other obsession for some.
