Hello RTH! These two are birthstones heart This penny heart, cut from a very small vibed slab, (smaller that a dime even) -is sardonyx. a scratch eeeekkk! Or something very close to sard. Maybe it’s a laker agate ? It’s the birthstone for the month of August. This onyx heart is the birthstone for February Now I’m really confused. What is sardonyx ? I assumed it was an onyx-- but I’m learning other wise. Anyone have a good explanation? Thanks for looking ! Hearts are hard I appreciate the support ED

It looks almost like carnelian until you get close enough to see the banding.

I agree Michelle !
have you ever looked at sardonyx? I always thought it was onyx that was black ?
I'm not 100% sure what the difference between onyx and an agate is beside crystal structure and hardness plus I think some of the confusion comes from the ancient word sardonyx itself
but it is considered a birthstone so it must have been a fairly popular recognizable stone at one time..
