Been fooling around with press forming tumbled stones to create a form fitting bezel. Maybe even doing castings first and hammer forming against the casting. In this case the tumble was pressed into annealed 28 gauge copper 3-4 times. Re-annealing each time. Result amusing. But, one drop of water in the bezel cup would hold the tumble by suction when turned upside down. Tight fitting form for sure.

That is really interesting. That would make some very organic jewelry. Think I will try it.

Better if it was a 3 inch so bezel clears. Thick leather between press end and rock. The rounder the rock the more waves produced. Use tough rocks ! Got no buffer set up yet. Copper very oxidized. A half talented buffer could do some nice highlights.

Those are cool! I was thinking more of a Lotus leaf than Cauliflower If you want them to be permanent in the cups, rough up the base of the stone and inside the cup just a bit so the epoxy will grip the stone better. Those would look stunning in a 12X14" Zen garden! There is your marketing idea for the day

Excellent Arlen.

I get a share or two when the new company goes public Actually, I bet you could make the shallow boxes, bag some sand, include a toy rake and a couple "Lotus stones" and sell them on Etsy

Pending ' radio sand packing process'. I tried to defy you by pressing them into an assortment of materials. Even cut up an old rubber boot and an old leather boot for materials. Arlen's sand process won hands down. I suppose you could press a 4 inch cobble into a large 'bezel' and get a full sized lotus leaf. i.e. think big... Better get out the hydraulics for that one. Some of these coral tumbles are strong enough to be pressed into steel I believe. Perverse jewelry techniques, love it.

It's all about experimentation. I would stick with two or three smaller sizes for the Zen dealieo.
Another cool thing for the bigger ones would be a small tranquility fountain. you could stack three or four and have a cool relaxation pool. Now you just need to find a way to miniaturize some real Lotus for the mini gardens and you will be a rich man! :-)

I would use soldered wires to hold the stone (think prong) to the center. If you didn't want to solder, I bet you could even poke a heavy, short headpin through a hole from the back and fold it over a bit-- if that made any sense. You got a cool look working there.

Very organic! Reminds me of the earth star fungus. www.google.co.uk/search?q=earth+star+fungusGreat idea for the zen garden product. I believe the 'indoor zen garden' concept already exists, but these set stones would give you the edge with a usp.

My dentist shot my tooth with a new fan dangled laser device. Right in my mouth. It recorded the 3-D image of my molar on a computer. She feeds the data into a CNC diamond bit carving machine and carves an exact crown out of hard ceramic using the data. Ceramic probably mohs 8-9. Would think that a machine like that could cut a die out of die material for hammering a random shaped bezel for a rock in the same fashion. Need to sneak into the dentist office on the weekend.

You could build that laser canner/mill setup yourself. Google DIY CNC mill and DIY laser scanner. The electronics are affordable, the software free and the structure is out in your field, I am certain. Http://www.instructables.com is your friend too!

May could do Scott. You seem pumped about the idea. Perhaps there is a potential.
Thanks for the info too.
They may have 3-Dim tools coming soon at a Walmart near you, no telling. I kinda doubt it though.
