Thank you all again Dave What flux do you use? If you don't have one, buy a couple of needle tipped flux applicator bottles. To keep the flux from bubbling and displacing small pieces, quickly pass the torch over the piece a few times until the flux dries. If heated too quickly, it will bubble and displace things, or even cause them to pop some distance as you have discovered. Gently warming the piece is the way to go Sometimes the flux will dry in the applicator needle, so I immerse the tip in my ultrasonic cleaner for a few seconds. Works like a charm! If you don't have one, get yourself an Ionic cleaner. It will remove most tarnish from sterling and not damage delicate gems like an ultrasonic. I really, really want a steam machine, but the big ones are too expensive and the small ones don't work as well. Nothing makes metal and diamonds sparkle like a good steam cleaning though!

A lovely piece - the granulation adds a simple elegance to your design.
It's a shame the granule went pear-shaped on you. I take it that it was the leftmost of the two near the bail. The thing is, what can you do with it now? (With those long prongs of yours) you might be able to pop the stone and sort it out? Either file it right out and start again or maybe file it almost out and then solder in a matching granule that you've given a flat back to. Just food for thought...

Personally, I'm a fan of low-tech. A borax-cone and an unglazed dish do it for me. I'll make my flux a bit more watery than most, then I decant some of the liquid into a small screw-topped sample-tube. It will stay 'fresh' in there for weeks (even months!) and I'll apply a little with a small paintbrush when I need. Because my flux has a high water content I have to take care to apply only a little or it runs. Pickle removes the tarnish.

It's not my best piece, was not happy with some of the granulation.next time will be different, damn little silver beads ain't gonna win.lol I know how to get them round, what i don't know is how to get them smooth. They seem to get slightly pitted the larger I make them. I guess i could tumble them, but i've retired my tumbler for the time being due to space issues.
