Hi everyone,
We were thinking of go to the Agate Expo in Cedarburg Wisconsin this summer (July 8 - 10th). But seeing as how it is about a 1400 mile round trip from were we are in central NY state, I'd like to make the trip worthwhile by hitting some rock hounding locations too. Could y'all recommend some locations for hounding? I guess locations in northern Indiana and Ohio, and locations in southern Michigan would also be possibilities since we will be driving through them to get to Wisconsin.
Thanks, Herb

I live in southern Michigan and there really is not anything I would collect around here. There is a cool fossil park that you can check out on the way near Toledo Ohio olander parkNot sure how far out of your way it would be but Flint Ridge in Ohio has great collecting. One of my pieces from my trip to the Flint Ridge. Here is a google map link to the collecting area Nethers farmHere are some pictures of the collecting area forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/60465/flint-ridge-trip-report-heavyChuck

Is your route going to be something like one of these three options? Might help folks see where you plan to travel. New York to CedarburgChuck

Great information! That is a sweet looking cab too! Looks like Flint Ridge would not be too far out of the way, and from the trip report link you provided sounds like the digging is easy with lots of material. My favorite kind of dig! Hi Chuck, We'd most likely just go route 90 all the way. What we'd save in tolls going the other routes would be spent in time and gas! Of course, if there is a reason to go another route for a dig, were all for it! Is your route going to be something like one of these three options? Might help folks see where you plan to travel. No one has any other ideas? What about lake Superior Agates? I've seen several websites that say they can be found "everywhere" in Wisconsin, but I am wondering if it is really possible to find some decent agates without spending 6 hours to get 2 or 3 small nuggets.

Highly recommend Flint Ridge. The knappers throw away all kinds of great tumbling material...

Thanks, Herb I am about an 40 mins from Cedarburg. I do not know of any places. LSA's (lakers) my be found a the Lake (Michigan) but they are few and far between. And Superior where you have a better chance is 6hrs north.

Lake Sup. Agates are pretty scarce around the Duluth, MN, Superior, WI area. The local beaches are void of anything interesting. But gravel roads, old railroad grades are good hunting spots up here. The gravel pits all have signs forbidding agate hunters. But beach Lake Superior Agates can be found once you get 30 miles from either Superior or Duluth on the lake shore.

On another forum (on Facebook) somebody showed a fossil they found in a river near Milwaukee today. A small crinoid vertebra or something like that.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! While it would be fun to find some lakers, it looks like my limited time would be best spent at Flint Ridge. I'll probably still try hunting a bit for agates though, you never know when you will get lucky!

DirtCleaner I just picked up a few at an estate. Now I have to figure out if any of them are worth anything.

DirtCleaner I just picked up a few at an estate. Now I have to figure out if any of them are worth anything. We love photos. DirtCleaner Da Photos. this is part of them, not even half of what I have. I now have to sort them and figure out which I can tumble and which I should grind. And which ones I should just leave alone and not do anything with them. jamesp (just getting your attention)

Hello, well I live in Ohio and have only found flint, granite but nothing good. Of coarse I live in southeastern Ohio, but I think it's all the same. Could be wrong but... I would try a different state, myself. Drive safe.

Looks like you loaded up. Estate sales are hard to beat. Rare snakeskin, the white tumbled one a bit left and down from center

Why yes it is . .... Sometimes you get thrown a bone. I picked up lots (hundreds of pounds) of things in all shapes and sizes. The lakers were my big score with about 500lbs worth of all different grades. So now I have to learn about them enough to know what I can cut and what I should just leave. Some of the other stuff is easier to deal with. I picked up all sorts of agate for cutting, and some display pieces.

I need to move out west where people trip over good cutting rough walking out their front door :-)
