Never gone geode hunting before, but a 70 degree February day in Kentucky will get you out doing something. A few pics from the trip.
It's a long walk down the cut and somehow the jokesters designed it so it's actually longer on the way back up the hill with full buckets, I swear!
Glad I didn't bring the boys. Trains were busy and much ice and rock falling off the faces.
Some of the already broken pieces I found.
Found some fossils there also.
The guys are anxious to get the rest of them open and see what we've got. Hoping for a little amethyst.
All in all, there were 75 lbs. of geodes carried out. The flower beds will have a little extra sparkle this Spring.

Wow!!! Amazing!!!! We're supposed to get some bad weather tonight so I might go muck-hunting tomorrow...or maybe mud-hunting...I can't make up my mind. Those crystals are NICE...and the fossils add icing to the cake!!!! Do you find the geodes between the plates of gray rock or are they laying loose? I have no idea.... Looks like a big ol' bunch of fun, though, however you find them!!!!!!!

Is that in Lincoln county, KY? Or nearby? Try the rivers and creeks. May not find amethyst, but larger geodes are abound.
I'm moving back to KY next month! Rockcastle county, here I come!
And those fossils! Crinoids, I think they are. Plenty to be found.
You can also find pet wood in the creeks.
I've found calcite nodules in Rockcastle county, they have grey, bubbly exteriors.

We've been lucky to have a couple nice days on the weekends since Christmas, when I got bitten by the bug, but we're going to be ready to go in the Spring. The geodes are imbedded in the layer you see undercut in the picture, so they do fall out and can be found in the slide pile, or you can dig them out. I didn't climb around too much due to falling ice and rock. I liked the fossils also, here is my favorite.

Hey, adam, Walt manofglass told me to look you up, said you were around my area. That is Kings Mountain, Lincoln County. I'm new to this, so I've only been out 'hounding' twice. I hit Estill County and found some agate my first trip out. This time, for geodes, I wanted to have a chance at finding one with some purple, so Lincoln County. We haven't opened them yet, but we'll find out soon. I'll be hitting the area creeks for all the goodies when the weather's good.

Nice finds, very cool! Looking at some of those large rocks at the bottom of the wall, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't want to be spending much time digging in that undercut area either if you had rocks and ice falling.

Wish I could go to Estill CO. whenever I felt like. That's a quaint little drive! I don't have an automobile, yet. But I would gladly hunt with someone like you. I honestly prefer solid KY agate over geodes and nodules of quartz. Estill has a bit of everything, so does Jackson. All in all, I'd rather hunt farther east than in Lincoln and Rockcastle.

Hit me up when you get back this way. I live in Lexington, work in Richmond, but I've pinpointed several locations in multiple counties on Google Earth I want to hit when the weather cooperates. I'm sure we could get you over to Jackson County easy enough.

What kind of work you do, Garage Rocker?
And that sounds like a great idea. I'll have to save my cash to buy a saw to trim my finds.
Here is something I picked up in Rockcastle. agate
Oh, and if you know much about Berea College, they have a rock saw. Maybe you know already. I've never asked to use it because I am too shy, and whenever I get money it doesn't last more than a few weeks.

What's the phone number? I visited the BC geology museum website, there's a number there but I'm not tot keen it's the same. Would I ask for Larry, or is it his phone number?
I dropped out of Berea College after one day. Some of my teachers graduated from there.
I won't get back to KY until about the 6th of March. Destination: Berea Greyhound.

I'll get the number for you, it's at home right now. Larry is semi-retired and is only there from 10-12 each day. If you go, plan on him giving you a tour of the geology museum. Can't beat that! Where will you end up in Rockcastle?
