Howdy All, I will be making a trip to San Diego this weekend thru next week and decided to try my luck at the Pala Chief Mine and the Oceanview Mine screening. Anyone here have experience going there? Any tips or tricks on finding better materials? Anybody else wanna go? Thanks, ~Roland

Watch the ground as you're walking out to the screening piles. Some kid found a beer can sized tourmaline laying on the surface a few years back.

I've been to the Himalaya (once is enough!), never been to the Pala Chief or Ocean View. Imagine they would be a similar experience. But, hey, you'll have fun, enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, and come home with your wallet a little bit lighter, lol. Best wishes for finding some nice stuff!!

I was at the Pala mine once way back in the 50's, when it was called the Stuart Lithia Mine. It was a Jr. High rock club field trip before the mine became commercialized. We all had a great time, and everyone came home with a few small specimens of tourmaline in matrix. The then owner of the mine even opened the big steel doors to the mine & allowed us to go a short distance into the mine.

Thanks everyone! I have been enjoying teasing my Colorado workmates with images of the beach and the weather reports from San Diego!! I have watched most of the videos that I can find and read several reports from mine visitors. So far everything that I can find sounds like positive experiences. I'm trying to keep my expectations low, but I am excited to get out and play in the dirt! I especially like going to locations with minerals that are new for me to collect. Although most people are going for the gems, I have seen that there are large piles of Lepidolite at the mine and some visitors have taken home some quality looking material. I am anxious to see what the rules are on this material and what is available. You can be sure that I will have fun and I will make a report, a la herchenx style!! ~Roland

HOpe you had a good time ... we did the dig a couple of years ago. It was a lot of fun. Make sure to post pics! Would love to see what you find. Paul
