I am getting so antsy waiting for Spring. We've had a few warm days here and there, but nothing to get on a roll about. I have a bunch of new rocks to cut. Come on Spring!!!! What I was wondering is-- Are any of you hampered by the seasons? I know I am and so is mohs (but for different reasons).

Hi Tela
Yep usually my grind season is October and I can continue until end of May. Again though, this February as been unseasonably warm, and I’m not quite as active as seasons past. But morning stay cool and that makes all difference to get some projects started.

Yes, I am jonesing for warm weather! I spent most of my life in the SF Bay Area where winter meant rain, but no freezing temps or snow. Then I moved to Utah in '07 where we have snow & freezing temps. This weekend was nice so we went out & did a little hiking on Sat. Not to a place that had interesting rocks to collect, but it was great to get out. My cabber is in my office, so at least I don't have to wait for warm weather to work on rocks. Tela, I feel for you. Spring is just around the corner! Lynn

I can usually handle the break,we only get a few months of cold weather (Oregon standards,of cold),than it's bearable to be outside working..(40 and above)... I do carpenter work in our home in the winter months...So my wife likes the breaks I get...LOL

I've had a couple days warm enough to use the trim saw, but that damn dopping wax is pretty particular stuff.

I've had a couple days warm enough to use the trim saw, but that damn dopping wax is pretty particular stuff. All of my cabbing and grinding equipment is the basement and during the winter months here in Michigan I have to empty my gravity feed water buckets and refill them with very hot water before each cabbing session to keep the dop wax happy. My slab saws are in the unheated garage and even though they work fine in the cold I don't. Chuck

If I crank the heat way up, I can cab in the house, but we don't keep it THAT warm in the cold months. We usually keep it down to long sleeves. As warm as that water has to be for the wax, I think we would not only be uncomfortable but my heating bill would be through the roof. I envy you your workspace. Gravity feed sounds nice, too. It would be a nice solution for me if I had a permanent set up for my Gene.

My heart, body, and soul want warm 80-90! If it is going to be cold, I want wind and rain, none of this in-between gray stuff.

This year I bought a propane tank and heater and put them in my garage. When it is cold and i want to cab, i fire it up pointed toward my work area and equipment. In 30 minutes the garage is toasty & equipmemt warm. I add hot water to my water buckets and am good to go until the water gets cold again.

Its the opposite here, well I am on the opposite side of the world. I am sick of hot hot days and hot nights, the country side is parched, grass has turned from nice yellow to that dirty crisp cooked look, a couple of coolish hours in the morning and then its too hot. Curse you El Nino.
Hey rockjunquie, I have a steel pole (an old tent pole) that I bolt to my grinder. It has a bolt through the top making a sort of hook. For water I have a plastic tupperware jug with a lawnmower petrol tap screwed into a hole near the bottom, just take it inside fill it with warm water slide the water pipe onto the tap and away you go. Tent pole is good because it is extendable to however high you want and can be folded up for storage.

I must be daft because I am wondering, where does the waste water go? I can see having warm water geysers, but then you must also drain the water. I have a genie, so I would have to rig something for that. Unless I am missing something.

Although it's been one of the milder winters here in Central NY, it's still is cold and long. Luckily, the basement in this new house stays a bit warmer than the old place, so i can pretty much work stone year round now. The water in the Genie gets pretty cold, though. I've used warm water on occasion. Doesn't stay warm for long.
But i am itching to get out and start my garden this year! Yesterday it got up to 56 degrees F, such a tease as it is only 36 degrees F today. At least we are getting a little more daylight, day by day. So yes, my mood improves with more sunlight and warmer temps.

what the question becomes for me is what is the biggest deterrent to working rock ? mood wise? hot or cold?
for me its hot even if I have refrigerated room my energy level really lags in warm weather I just want to do the MDR. that why I always say: I crawl under a rock
Cold/cool weather I have energy given a warm place to work I’d probably grind all day

Saturday it was warm enough for the bees to fly. They did their first cleansing flight of the year(they haven't pooped since Nov) and the side of the house and my cars were plastered in bee poop. Had to wash the cars but it was almost 50. This morning it dropped 21 degrees in 1 hour 20 above zero to -1 below with a 25 mph wind. Wind chill -20. Think we are ready for spring? He&* yeah. The oil doesn't freeze in the unheated garage but too cold for me until it get 30 or so and sunny. In the dead of winter creativity is lacking with only 8 hrs of light. We have gained over 2 hrs so things are getting better and the cold doesn't hold on very long. Soon we will be cussing the mosquitos. I seen a post someone putting out tomatos, ours go out June 10.

For sure here in northern Colorado, in mood and temperature. All my stuff is in the garage and ice cold water dribbling on hands in an icy garage is not conductive to good cabbing. I have a space heater, and I can use lukewarm water but when it's really cold forget about it. Finally getting warm enough, I've got about 20 dop sticks all set up and in various stages...
