Some safety advice for people who use or plan to use BBQ-type 20-lb. propane tanks indoors: it's probably not a good idea.
The reasons: propane is heavier than air and will pool on the floor. Any type of spark or pilot light will cause it to explode. And propane tanks can leak from their relief valves when temperatures increase sufficiently to allow gas expansion that eliminates the essential vapor barrier at the top of the tank. Professionals say tanks should be filled to only 80% for safety reasons. Even so, if a tank is filled to 80% at 10 degrees F. and then stored inside at 74 F. or so, it will vent. Outdoor storage is recommended.
