The weather this winter has allowed a few trips out collecting, even if conditions aren't ideal. I'm new at this, and all gung-ho right now, so a little cold and high water be damned! I'm hitting the creeks. Here are a few pics of the terrain in the Knobs section of Kentucky, on the outer ring of the Bluegrass region, where the elusive KY agate is found. So far, I've found lots of quartz nodules, some chert, some agate, geodes and even what I believe is a coyote skeleton. No premium agate yet, though I may have some and not know it...until I get a saw and can look inside. Take a peek.
The valley I've worked over a couple times now.
The fog was just burning off and the temp was creeping over freezing.
The creek above feeds into a larger section.
Made me wonder what kind of company I kept while meandering through the creek.
The haul, at least part of it.
If you have the time and want to see any more location/specimen pics, check out the day's album at the link below. Thanks for looking! Randy

Nice! thanks for the pictures. My family is from KY - I spent a few summer's there on my grampa's farm as a kid. I'd love to go back there to do some rockhounding one day.

Those big red modules are gonna be your target. Fill your truck with those.
I learned that while rockhounding eBay. There is a dude selling lots of those.

One of my cousins in KY has a farm that has geodes growing on it. I hear you can pretty much just walk around and pick them up. My brother went out there a couple of years ago and brought back a bucket of them.

Yes, Tommy and @shotgunner, if you are looking for bourbon, geodes or big gnarly red rock, you'll definitely find it here. Come on down!!!

I missed this post. That area looks beautiful. Thirty three degrees is definitely warm enough for rock hounding. If you're moving, you'll stay warm. captbob is a cold wimp. I hunt a lot of water, but usually the Great Lakes. I have checked out a couple of streams, but haven't found anything in them. Do you wear hip boots or waders? I do and I have scoops I made out of a slotted spoon and a piece of PVC pipe. It works great for reaching into deeper water. Neoprene gloves are nice too. Are you going to post some spring pictures?

I'll post some pics when I get back out. Yesterday was soccer with the kids all day and today I skipped hounding to make an investment in my future hobby activities. I went to my first rock club meeting. They are hosting a show in a couple weeks and I thought I'd go to the meeting and offer a hand. Met a lot of helpful people, but missed a trip to see one of the local authorities on the KY agate by one day. He was selling out of his piles accumulated over 30 years of collecting. I saw some nice stuff people brought back. Looking forward to meeting him at the rock show. I was just looking at rock scoops online the other day. Hadn't thought of making my own. I wear hip boots, but the scoop would give me a lot more access to deeper pools. Thanks for the idea! Randy
