Yesterday I got to spend a few hours with my uncle who does a little silver work. I've been threatening for quite a while now to come visit and have him teach me a thing or two. I finally made good on my threat I brought along a cab I had made a few years ago. He supplied the silver and tools and walked me through the process. I took some pics of my first few steps. Wrapping the bezel wire around the cab and marking it Oops, didn't get a good joint on the bezel. I was given the chance to start over but didn't want to waste his wire and decided I could maybe just even it up later.. heh Cut and stamped a backing plate And soldered Trimmed and voila.. my first bezel cup Traced out a bail design and cut it, worked it a bit and soldered it on. Set the stone, polished and this is what I ended up with It's by no means perfect but given time restraints and being my first time doing this I'm very happy with it! wonky joint How it hangs. Christa says she likes it Thanks a bunch for looking!

Looks really good, better than many first timers. Now you know any spare time you had is now gone and expect to work late into the night just to finish one last piece. Silver is addicting. Good job, Bennett

Good job! You learned design, cutting, sawing, pickling, fluxing, filing and probably a lot more. That is terrific!
Thanks for takingusthrough the process.

Great job! Wow! That's a whole lot better than my first attempt. Now you'll have to set all your cabs. That cab is a beauty, btw, and so is the piece.

Great first attempt! You know, your join isn't wonky, just one side a little higher. All you needed to do was run the top over sandpaper to even it out. Takes a few seconds. Can't do it now tho!
Keep going, I envy you having an instructor!

Lucky you to have a mentor! Great job for a first attempt under time constraints! I can't wait to try it.

Thank you very much everyone! Hard to concentrate today at work as all I can think about is starting my next project I meant to give a shout out to radio when I posted this yesterday. The past week or so he has answered a barrage of questions, given me advise on what tools I need as well as procedural tips and provided a bunch of great links. Thanks Arlen! Okay, time to go work on my bench

That's a really good first effort. Really good!
As well as sanding, you can unsolder it. Do this by placing the bezel under tension (I pick up the bezel with a sawn-off steel tent peg that I use as a round mandrel then hang a wire jig from the bottom of the bezel). Heat it until it pings apart, giving you attempt 2 with no recycling.

Thanks again everyone. On Tuesday my uncle started throwing up blood and had to be admitted to the hospital. He has had some major heart surgeries in his time, the first at age 14 and most recent about 5 years ago. He is 70. He had an aneurism where scar tissue started bleeding into his lungs. He has been in a medically induced coma since they brought him in. They did a bronchoscopy yesterday to remove clots, but they cannot stop the bleeding. Please keep him in your thoughts.

Did you mean he was coughing up blood? If the blood is in the lungs then he would be coughing it up. If in the stomach he would be throwing up blood and it should look like coffee grounds. Being that he has had previous heart surgeries and they cannot stop the bleeding he is likely on a blood thinner such as Coumadin (Warfarin). If this is the case then they should be looking at vitamin K therapy to control the bleeding. After heart issues a lot of people will also take daily aspirin, which can also interfere with clotting.
