Hi there! I'm a new member of the Forum and new to Rock Tumbling. I bought an AR-12 and started my first batch of rocks last week. I live in Longmont, Colorado and have a cabin along the Middle St. Vrain River about 30 minutes from here. Although I've had the cabin for 25 years, it just occurred to me recently that it might be fun to polish some of the rocks that I've found in and around the river. I like to do photography also, so it will be fun to post pictures of some of my rocks. After reading lots and lots of information (from here and other sites) I guess that means in about 7 or 8 weeks from now! That's ok. I'm a patient guy. Every year, for a long time, I have printed (I own a printing company) a calendar with some of my photos. I hope my 2017 calendar will have some nice rock photos!

Welcome from Ky! Your patience will serve you well, but it's still hard not to do something with your rocks in between cleanouts. Look forward to seeing some photos from your area.

Welcome from Fort Collins, CO. Pics are the name of the game around here, some good info for new members in another thread about posting pics.
My experience with Colorado river rock is it is mostly granite with a smattering of epidosite (green) massive quartz (usually white) and some pink feldspar. Granite from here is tough to tumble well, has a lot of variety in the composition and tends to undercut pretty bad.
Hit up Blue Stone on the west side of Loveland and pick up a few pounds of Montana agate, either small nodules or slabs, and that can be pretty tumbled - or head to Red Rose up in Estes and get some of their tumbling mixes. They bought a Fort Collins Rockhounds Club members collection after he passed last year and I've gotten some nice carnelian and seen other nice mixes from his stuff for sale.
As far as collection to get decent tumbles I'd head to Wyoming or down to South Park. Have found some pretty tumbling stuff off 285 east of county road 24 just along the road where the grader pre-smashed some really pretty red agate/chalcedony.
Also check out the Bayou Salado store in Hartsel while you are in South Park - you can get permission to collect blue barite on their claim. It won't tumble but it is fun and can be pretty.
Welcome!

Welcome to the forum, Ron. Hey, you've actually got rock to hunt...personally, I've got some of the finest mud and muck around here in south Alabama...it doesn't polish up to well, though.

Thank you all for the nice welcome! John (herchenx) - Thanks for the tips on where to look for rocks. I'm heading to Colorado Springs and Pueblo tomorrow for some fly fishing. I'll look for some "keepers" while I'm there! -Ron

Welcome from Greeley. Have fun looking around. I used to fish quite a lot and pick up rocks, too. Always seemed to do better finding rocks than fish.
